The Oklahoma Sooners lost a game that they had well under control on Saturday night, 21-13 to the Kentucky Wildcats. Despite a strong start, the offensive coaching staff left John Mateer and a banged-up offensive line exposed.
Up six with a minute to play in the third quarter and driving for more points on the Kentucky side of the 50, offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle called a deep shot, and right tackle E'Marion Harris was beaten cleanly, getting to Mateer, who had the ball tipped as he was set to release it. The ball fluttered in the air until it fell into the waiting arms of Kentucky DB Ty Bryant. Bryant returned it to the Oklahoma 39. The Wildcats drove for the go-ahead touchdown, and the Sooners couldn't mount any offense the rest of the way.
Even when all they needed was a late field goal, the Sooners, with their banged-up offensive line, were stuck in the mud. The offense wasted another strong, though not perfect, defensive effort and created more frustration about the direction of the program than there was before the win over Texas.
Here's how social media reacted to the loss.
Offense Fails Again
I think at the end of the day, OU is a very poorly coached football team on offense. It’s hard to point the finger at one thing. Mateer is a turnover machine. The offensive line is never healthy and has no depth. And the playcalling is too inconsistent. Everything is bad.

What a waste
Kentucky scored 30+ points in all of their games expect one. Your defense holds them to 14 freakin points and you’re too offensively incompetent to win. Cool.

What if?
I can’t help but wonder what Oklahoma would look like if they never had Mateer and Arbuckle….

Where is OU's Offense?
Ok fine - I'll tweet.I took this weekend off - I do it once a fall. Been watching football tonight after a family day today. And I'm reminded of something... Other teams have QB's that "make plays." Other teams have WR's that "get open." Other teams have backs that break "big runs." Why doesn't Oklahoma? Why does every positive yard gained look so difficult for that offense? There are many, many reasons. And every one of them SUCKS. I'll enjoy watching more GOOD football as the night goes to early morning.

Just unnecessary from Arbuckle
Game changed on Mateer’s first INT. It was a horrendous play call.

Only Oklahoma
It’s just insane that OU lost this game.

Playcalling Atrocious
In the 4th quarter of a 1 point game the Sooners handed the ball to a running back ONE time. 3 possessions.ONE attempted run. Lots of 5 wide sets to start drives signaling pass coming with a beat up OL.ONE freaking handoff to a back. Change needs to happen.

Too Much Mateer
We were literally on Kentucky 38 yard line on 1st and 10 up 6 with 50s to go in the 3rd quarter and Arbuckle said no to HTBO. Mateer needs to be the hero. https://t.co/PV3lt4TuHq

The question we're all asking
How did we just lose this game ?

Brent Venables has to answer for offense
Everything always rolls up to Brent. He’s missed on multiple QB evaluations. The longer a QB plays for Brent, the worse they get. Assistant coaches are retained well past expiration date. Our style of play allows for zero margin of error on offense. How many more years?
