The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha over allegations of criminal conspiracy and forgery.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, confirmed that the former governor, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had been arrested, interrogated and subsequently released on bail.
Iniedu disclosed that Okorocha was released on bail on Monday but was directed to report to the police on Tuesday for further interrogation as investigations into the allegations continued.
The development comes amid reports that the former governor was arrested at a hotel in Abuja while attending a reception organised to celebrate a friend’s conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
Circumstances surrounding the arrest have drawn attention to the ongoing police investigation, although the authorities have not publicly provided detailed information about the specific allegations against Okorocha.
Police confirm investigation
Confirming the development, Iniedu maintained that Okorocha had been taken into custody, questioned by investigators and granted bail.
The police spokesperson did not, however, disclose the details of the alleged criminal conspiracy and forgery or explain the specific circumstances surrounding the accusations.
The Force also did not provide further information about the evidence being examined by investigators or indicate when the investigation would be concluded.
Okorocha’s release on bail does not amount to a conclusion of the investigation, as the police have directed him to return for further questioning.
Bench warrant reportedly obtained
Reports surrounding the arrest indicated that the police had obtained a bench warrant following Okorocha’s alleged failure to honour invitations to appear for interrogation.
A bench warrant is generally issued by a court to authorise the arrest of a person who is required to appear before it under specified circumstances.
However, the police have not publicly provided further details about the reported warrant, including the court that issued it or the specific proceedings connected to the matter.
The former governor’s alleged failure to honour previous invitations was said to have contributed to the steps taken by the authorities to secure his appearance for questioning.
Further details of the allegations, including the circumstances of the alleged forgery and the nature of the suspected conspiracy, remain undisclosed.
Okorocha, who governed Imo State from 2011 to 2019, is a prominent APC chieftain and former senator. The police investigation is ongoing, with the former governor expected to return for further interrogation as directed by the authorities.
