John Anderson, one of the “New Traditionalist” country singers of the 1970s who broke into the mainstream with chart-topping hits like “Wild and Blue”, “Swingin'” and “Black Sheep”, died Wednesday, October 21, at his home in Smithville, Tennessee. He was 71.
His death was announced by family on social media. A cause of death was not disclosed, but The LA Times reports that the singer died in his sleep.
The family statement on Anderson’s Instagram page reads, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and best friend. To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives. To us, he was so much more. He was the heart of our family, the one who made us laugh, loved us fiercely, and made every ordinary moment feel special. We are completely heartbroken.”
The statement continues, “His music will live on, but for us, his greatest legacy will always be the love he gave his family and the memories we will carry with us forever.”
Born December 13, 1954 in Apopka, Florida, Anderson moved to Nashville after high school, at first performing as a country duo with his sister before finding some success as a solo singer in the back-to-the-roots “New Traditionalist” movement alongside George Strait, Ricky Skaggs and Waylon Jennings, among others.
Anderson, even while maintaining the hard-country, keening vocal style of his traditionalist roots, began a move into mainstream country success in the early 1980s with his rocking, uptempo hit “Swingin'” and, with a nod to the more traditionalist style, the fiddle-heavy title song from his 1982 album “Wild & Blue.”
The album brought Anderson to the attention of the wider country radio audience, and earned a slew of Country Music Association award nominations, with “Swingin'” named Single of the Year and Anderson winning the Horizon Award for new artists.
The ’90s brought continued success, including with the chart-topping singles “Straight Tequila Night” and “Money in the Bank,” and popular albums including Seminole Wind and Solid Ground. He continued recording well into the 2000s, but with more modest results. His final albums Goldmine and Years were released in 2015 and 2020, respectively.
Anderson was inducted to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame on October 5, 2014, and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.
Following Anderson’s death, country star and former The Voice coach Blake Shelton paid tribute on Instagram, writing, “There is too much for me to say about @johnanderson in just a statement. I am sick and I am stunned. But I am a very lucky man. I got the opportunity to find out that my hero wasn’t just the guy I hoped he’d be. He was so much more than that. John was my friend. I got to see him last Sunday and I don’t even know why but I told him I loved him. That is what fills my heart in this moment. My love and prayers go out to John’s family. This one really hurts.”
Anderson is survived by his wife of more than 40 years, Jamie, and daughters Alexa Kate and Brionna Cheri.
