India has offered to supply the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) with specialised armoured vehicles intended to protect soldiers during operations against terrorist groups.
The Indian Defence Research Wing (IDRW) reported the offer on Thursday, October 15, following recent engagements between India’s Ministry of Defence and a Kenyan military delegation.
The vehicles under consideration are known as mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) platforms, designed to withstand explosions from landmines, improvised explosive devices (IED) and attacks targeting military convoys.
According to IDRW, Kenyan military representatives were shown several models manufactured by Indian state-owned and private companies for possible assessment.

One of the vehicles being promoted is BEML’s Medium Bullet-Proof Vehicle, while Tata and Bharat Forge are also marketing armoured platforms to potential customers across Africa.
The discussions come amid heightened security concerns in northeastern Kenya, where security personnel have been killed or injured in incidents involving suspected roadside IED linked to militant attacks over the past few months.
On October 9 the Hagadera Sub-County Police Commander and his driver were killed when their government-issued vehicle struck a suspected IED along the Saretho-Dadaab road in Garissa County.
Additionally, India’s offer is part of efforts to secure more defence contracts in Africa where Chinese manufacturers maintain a strong market presence.
The Indian government said it is offering financing options and seeking to simplify export approval procedures to attract buyers.
The proposed vehicle supply would add to broader cooperation between Kenya and India, which includes military training, professional education, maritime security and cooperation in defence manufacturing.
The two countries formalised their military partnership through a 2016 memorandum of understanding, established the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee in 2019 and adopted the BAHARI maritime vision in 2023 to support security in the Indian Ocean region.
