The Los Angeles Lakers have been up against the clock with their roster decisions. The team made a lot of moves this summer, and those decisions eventually caught up to them as they found themselves one player over the roster limit.
The player who was hinted at being cut throughout the process was former first-round pick Dalton Knecht. Lakers head coach JJ Redick revealed how Knecht got to this point.
“I think the biggest thing is the team changed. The team changed. Needs changed, the fit changed. I think he’s gotten better as a player the last two years. I think, particularly last year, each guy got plenty of opportunities with the injuries we had. I just think coming into this year, we added a lot of wings and he’s in a tough spot right now,” Redick said.
LA was hoping to get something of value for Knecht before waiving him. Over the weekend, the Lakers were trying to get a deal done.
‘As the 2026-27 season draws near and teams contemplate roster spots, the Knicks and Lakers have both actively been exploring trade talks to move Pacome Dadiet and Dalton Knecht, respectively, sources told ,” NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.
Knecht’s career in LA got off to a great start, as he established himself as a capable shooter with plenty of confidence. However, before his third season even begins, the Lakers have officially decided to waive him.
“The Los Angeles Lakers are waiving 2024 No. 17 pick Dalton Knecht, sources tell ESPN,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.
The Lakers had to make this decision with significant depth at the wing position. Knecht will look to take his talents to a team that values him and gives him an opportunity to thrive.
The former Tennessee Volunteer still has what it takes to carve out a role on another roster. Knecht will likely have to sign a two-way deal wherever he goes next, but an opportunity should be there.
