Greek authorities have dismantled a drug trafficking network in Thessaloniki that approached minors through encrypted messaging applications, including Telegram, and used cryptocurrency to collect payments. The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), through its DEOS operational teams, arrested three suspects and seized 3.5 kilograms of cannabis and 120 grams of cocaine.
The network used messaging applications popular among young people to provide instructions for obtaining various drugs and making payments in cryptocurrency.
Investigators found that the group operated an organised distribution network, with members assigned to specific areas and arrangements to fulfil delivery requests promptly. The suspects also used concealment techniques and measures designed to evade surveillance.
Authorities coordinated the operation using specialised analysis of the suspects’ profiles.
Officers initially arrested an 18-year-old man and seized 3.5 kilograms of cannabis in his possession.
Investigators then used special investigative techniques, including undercover infiltration. DEOS officers posed as prospective buyers and arrested two additional Greek nationals, aged 25 and 30.
Authorities seized a total of 120 grams of cocaine during the operation.
Subsequent searches of the suspects’ homes uncovered equipment associated with organised drug trafficking, including precision scales and a device for processing cryptocurrency payments.
The three suspects appeared before the competent prosecutor under the flagrante delicto procedure.
Authorities continue their investigation to identify and dismantle the organisation’s remaining cells.
