The Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) says work on the Northern Pipeline Upgrade Project has stalled after unexpected “infrastructural challenges” emerged during the replacement of an ageing 14-inch cast-iron pipeline with a modern 20-inch ductile-iron main.
Large blue pipes are visible along the roadside between the Bonne Terre and Gros Islet town gaps, where work on the final section of a phased northern transmission pipeline upgrade began in August.
According to WASCO, the challenges arose after excavation work began, forcing a revision of the project timeline. The company did not provide a revised completion date.
“The WASCO team, together with the consultant and the contractor, is now working assiduously
to address the identified issues, implement measures to prevent further interruptions, and safeguard the project’s integrity as it progresses,” the company said in a release.
“As promised, WASCO reassures the public that once work resumes, every effort will be made to minimise delays and inconvenience.”
The project is intended to improve the reliability of the northern transmission main, ultimately providing a more dependable water supply for residents and businesses in the north of the island.
