Blockchain.com seeks CFTC licenses for Bitcoin derivatives in US

Blockchain.com has applied for licenses from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to provide Bitcoin and cryptocurrency derivatives. The firm is seeking approval as a Designated Contract Market and Futures Commission Merchant, which would allow it to operate a futures exchange and broker derivatives in the U.S. This move places Blockchain.com among other firms vying for regulatory approval to expand their crypto-related offerings to U.S. retail and institutional clients. The application reflects a growing interest in regulated crypto derivatives markets, following Blockchain.com’s existing international offerings through platforms like Hyperliquid and Polymarket.

• The application is part of a competitive landscape, with 12 firms seeking similar approvals, indicating a significant push toward regulated derivatives offerings.
• Market behavior reflects moderate expectations for Bitcoin’s price increases, possibly influenced by this regulatory development.

What to Watch

The CFTC’s decision on Blockchain.com’s application will be a pivotal factor for the company and the broader market. Approval could heighten institutional interest in Bitcoin derivatives, which may influence price expectations.
