KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Anthony Loke has jokingly acknowledged Masjid Jamek LRT station's popularity among demonstrators, given its proximity to Dataran Merdeka.
He made the remark while launching Phase Three of the station's RM5 million upgrade project here today.
Loke said the station recorded about 1.5 million passenger movements a month, averaging 46,000 daily, with numbers rising during weekends and major events.
"If there are any major events here, Masjid Jamek will certainly become a focal point.
"That is what I meant when I said that if there are demonstrations, this becomes a focal station," he said.
Also present were Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud and Prasarana Malaysia Bhd acting group president Dr Prodyut Dutt.
In his opening speech, Loke said the area outside the station would offer visitors a place to relax and enjoy views of Masjid Jamek.
He said lighting improvements would also address complaints that the surroundings were too dark at night.
"People can rest here, have coffee here, with a beautiful view of Masjid Jamek," he said.
Loke said discussions were also under way on providing opportunities for those in the B40 income group to operate businesses in the commercial spaces planned under the project.
"As long as they do not obstruct traffic and it can be done safely, we have no objection. We hope traders will follow the usual procedures, apply for licences and operate legally," he said.
The project, undertaken by Prasarana in collaboration with Think City, includes improvements along Jalan Benteng, better lighting along Jalan Tun Perak, greener station platforms and upgraded directional signs.
Implemented in phases since last year, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
Prasarana said the upgrades would preserve the area's architecture and heritage while supporting Warisan KL's initiative to boost its tourism appeal and creative economy.
