- Sifuna questioned the government’s spending priorities and raised concerns over the housing levy and the Social Health Authority (SHA) contributions.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has vowed to abolish the housing levy if the opposition wins the 2027 General Election, renewing his criticism of President William Ruto’s administration over deductions from workers’ salaries.
In a post on X, Sifuna questioned the government’s spending priorities and raised concerns over the housing levy and the Social Health Authority (SHA) contributions.
“Is he done ranting about the 24K I pay for his housing scam because kuna hii 43 K I pay every month for his SHA scam we also need to discuss,” Sifuna wrote.
He also criticised what he described as excessive spending at State House, claiming that Ksh.500,000 in Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax was collected every month and spent on tea and mandazi.
Sifuna accused the administration of insulting taxpayers while relying on their contributions to finance government operations.
“In 2027 we are cutting the fat out of our budget to bring relief to all Kenyan workers. The housing levy will go with Ruto,” he added.
The remarks come amid ongoing debate over the financial burden of statutory deductions on Kenyan workers and the use of public funds.
The affordable housing levy is deducted from employees’ earnings to finance the government’s affordable housing programme, while contributions under the Social Health Authority framework fund the country’s new health insurance system.
