As anyone who’s seen her in concert knows, Charli xcx is usually laser-focused on her current material and rarely looks back for more than a couple of songs.
But she made an exception on Saturday night at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, when she performed her 2014 breakthrough hit “Boom Clap” (for the first time since 2023 according to setlist.fm), at the special request of guest Chappell Roan, who joined her for the song.
“Every night on tour, I play an old song. I asked a friend of mine if she would come and sing an old song of mine with me, and they said, ‘The only way I’m doing it is if it’s this song,’ so you have her to thank,” Charli said before Chappell joined her onstage for the song.
She didn’t stop there: Later in the evening, PinkPantheress came out for her own song, “Stateside,” followed by the Dare for an extended version of “Guess,” complete with pairs of underwear shot into the audience by a cannon.
Chappell will be headlining her own festival in Los Angeles next weekend, the two-day “Super Graphic Spectacular.”
The comparatively short 12-date North American arena tour in support of her latest album, “Music Fashion Film,” launched in Philadelphia on Sept. 11 and included two nights at both Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and Los Angeles’ Kia Forum — the second of which is tonight (Sunday), followed by dates in Glendale, Calif. before wrapping in Las Vegas.
“Music, Fashion, Film” dropped on July 24 and includes the singles “Rock Music” and “SS26,” with Charli pivoting to a more guitar-based sound than the electro-dance beats of its blockbuster predecessor, “Brat.”
