Bolstering its domestic portfolio, United Airlines is adding five new nonstop routes across North America, including destinations that have not been served in years, as well as brand-new itineraries. Although full details have not been publicized, three of the new legs will be bound for Canada, with the other two adding US destinations.

The new additions follow United and Air Canada's recent agreement to renew and expand their transborder joint business agreement, as Reuters covered. As United rolls out its new nonstop service, AC is introducing three new US-bound routes of its own for the 2027 season to balance and complement United's expansion.

United Airlines Adds Capacity Across The Continent

Of these five new destinations, three will be short-to-medium-haul international expansions while two represent workarounds to maintain total domestic capacity between major United hubs within the US. The temporary March 2027 domestic routes to Joplin and Lancaster are likely results of ongoing construction constraints at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD). Washington Dulles to Lancaster serves as an alternative routing option while O'Hare operations are heavily restricted.

As shared by Ishrion Aviation via X, the additions of Denver to Ottawa, Denver to Quebec City, and Newark to St. John's are all tied to the newly expanded transborder joint venture with AC. The Denver to Ottawa route re-establishes a connection that United Airlines operated until 2010. Meanwhile, Denver to Quebec City is a brand-new route.

For Newark to St. John's, this seasonal service marks a return by UA to Newfoundland and Labrador for the first time since 2016. Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer and President, Cargo at Air Canada, gave this comment in an October 16 press release:

“Air Canada and United's long-standing partnership continues to deliver meaningful results for our customers and communities. For nearly three decades, Air Canada and United have worked to facilitate seamless travel and strengthen connectivity between Canada and the United States."

From The Lone Star State To 'La Belle' Province

The cross-border routes represent a major strategic growth push into Canada, while the short-term domestic adjustments are direct workarounds for ongoing airport infrastructure bottlenecks. At the moment, it is known that UA will be flying Bombardier CRJ-200 jets on the domestic itineraries. However, the planes that will serve its new Canadian destinations have not yet been published.

Service to the domestic destinations is expected to kick off in spring, while the Canadian flights will take off in the summer, according to Travel Market Report. Below is the table of five new routes that United will begin next year based on the information available now:

Originally established in 2022, the Transborder Joint Business Agreement allows UA and AC, as Star Alliance carriers, to operate essentially as a single airline on flights between the US and Canada. Instead of actively competing against each other, they coordinate schedules, pool revenue, and co-plan network growth. Rather than duplicating flights on the same routes, the airlines are dividing and conquering.

Air Canada Matches United With More Transborder Routes

The centerpiece of AC's complementary push is a brand-new connection between Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF), which is expected to launch in April 2027. AC is also linking its Quebec hub to the American Midwest by introducing daily seasonal service between Montréal-Trudeau (YUL) and Indianapolis International Airport (IND). The airline is anticipated to run this service from the beginning of June through the end of September 2027.

Finally, the carrier is bridging Western Canada with the East Coast by launching a transborder route between Edmonton International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). To further reinforce this growth, AC is also boosting capacity on its existing Edmonton International Airport (YEG) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) route by replacing smaller regional aircraft with its modern Airbus A220 small narrowbody jets.

According to Bloomberg, the two airlines are working on adding as many as 10 more US-CAN itineraries as well. Quartz reported that it could include: Montréal-Chicago, Montréal-Washington, Ottawa-New York, Toronto-San Francisco and Vancouver-San Francisco. The expanded joint venture now supports more than 1,200 connecting itineraries across North America and thousands more with the introduction of even more options after the full expansion is approved.
