An NFL game in Nashville became a warning about extreme heat when artificial turf reportedly hit 157 degrees Fahrenheit, with players in the Eagles-Titans matchup saying their cleats began to soften and melt during play.
One Eagles lineman said he had to switch between several pairs of shoes to get through the game.
Here's what to know
In a YouTube Short, Justin Pack of EcoBits (@EcoBitsOfficial) recapped the Eagles-Titans game in Nashville, saying the playing surface hit 157 degrees and affected players' equipment.
Pack highlighted one Eagles lineman's account: "Cleats, I went through a couple today. Halftime was like a NASCAR pit crew helped me get ready for the second half."
After the game, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni also pointed to the toll the conditions took. "I had to get an IV," Sirianni said, suggesting the heat was affecting people on the sideline as well as players on the field.
Summing up the situation, Pack said, "The NFL is cooked, like literally."
More background
To explain the temperature spike, the video cited artificial turf's tendency to absorb and retain more heat than grass and referenced a review of 23 studies finding that synthetic fields can run about 17 to 61 degrees warmer than natural turf.
A field hot enough to soften cleats and send a coach for an IV raises concerns about heat exposure, hydration, and safe playing conditions.
Pack also argued that the issue extends beyond artificial turf, saying warming trends are forcing sports to adjust, especially in outdoor venues where heat can intensify at field level.
For comparison, the video said tennis has already adopted extreme-heat rules. If episodes like this keep happening, football could face growing pressure to set its own standards.
What can be done?
The most direct solution raised in the video and its comments was reducing reliance on artificial turf. Because Pack cited research showing synthetic fields can run dramatically hotter than grass, several commenters argued that the NFL should reconsider the surfaces it uses.
One commenter wrote: "Put grass in or domes."
Another commenter said a company "worth well over 300 billion dollars is more than capable of enforcing an artificial turf ban," while others suggested more targeted changes for the hottest stadiums.
Some proposals focused on managing the heat instead of replacing the surface outright. One commenter suggested "Mist machines?" and another proposed "a local service for every stadium (with a heat issue) to grow, prepare, and set the turf right before every game."
At the institutional level, Pack's tennis comparison pointed to another possible path: formal heat rules. Such rules would fit the pattern of sports organizations adapting to hotter conditions.
"Climate change is going to start affecting how athletes can safely play the games," Pack said.
Where can I learn more?
Scorching fields, like the one in Nashville, have fueled a debate over artificial turf and extreme heat in sports.
• Engineers have created a cooler artificial turf that could curb dangerous field temperatures.
• Athletes are also facing potential health threats from chemicals embedded in artificial turf.
• At MetLife Stadium, players said the artificial turf has contributed to serious injuries.
