30 per cent of flights in Spain experienced delays or cancellations during the summer months of July to September, according to data from AirHelp, which analysed more than 290,000 flights at 44 domestic airports.
In total, 88,000 flights were affected by incidents; of these, 85,000 were delayed by at least 15 minutes and nearly 3,000 were cancelled. Furthermore, more than 22,000 flights were delayed by an hour or more, representing approximately 8 per cent of the total analysed. Of these, 6,500 were delayed by at least two hours, whilst 2,400 were delayed by three hours or more.
Based on the data collected, AirHelp has compiled a ranking of the most punctual airports, focusing on those with more than 400 monthly departures. Under this criterion, Asturias Airport topped the list, with 84 per cent of flights on time. It was followed by Bilbao, with 81 per cent, and Santiago de Compostela, with 80 per cent. Melilla, with 80 per cent, and Santander, with 79 per cent, also stood out.
At the opposite end of the scale was Palma Airport, which recorded the lowest punctuality rate in the ranking, at 59 per cent. Meanwhile, Ibiza achieved 64 per cent, Reus 64 per cent, and Barcelona-El Prat 65 per cent. As for other major airports, Alicante recorded 66 per cent of flights arriving on time and Valencia 67 per cent. Madrid-Barajas achieved 74 per cent, placing it in the middle of the rankings.
And a report from Eurocontrol for June 1 to August 31 indicates that only 53% of flights from Palma Airport departed on time. Of major European airports, this made Palma the third worst in terms of punctuality just behind Zurich and Lisbon. The report also shows that seven per cent of Palma flights were cancelled.
