Originally, Capcom released the original Resident Evil 3 in 1999. Later, the company launched a modern remake for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2020. Furthermore, Nintendo fans received a cloud version of the remake on the original Switch in 2022. Cloud versions allowed fans to experience games that were otherwise too powerful for the original Switch hardware. However, that setup required players to maintain a stable internet connection at all times.
Resident Evil 3 Remake Details & Other Nintendo Switch 2 Ports
Now, following the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, Capcom prioritizes bringing several Resident Evil games to the new system natively. Consequently, players no longer need to worry about an internet connection after finishing the initial download. Earlier this year, Capcom launched ‘Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’ and ‘Resident Evil Village’ on the console, alongside ‘Resident Evil Requiem’. Additionally, three more Resident Evil titles will arrive on the Switch 2 on October 16. Specifically, this lineup includes Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4. Moreover, all three games will include all previously released DLC.
The newly released X footage gives players a clear look at Resident Evil 3 on the new hardware. The story takes place in Raccoon City and puts players in the role of returning hero Jill Valentine. In the clip, Jill attempts to escape from the dreaded Nemesis. She actively evades the creature while moving past ruined storefronts in the decimated city.
Overall, this gameplay gives fans a better idea of what to expect on the Switch 2. It also shows how the port will stack up against versions on other platforms. The Resident Evil remakes have achieved both critical and commercial success over the last few years. While we still have to see how fans receive the Switch 2 versions, the Resident Evil 3 footage suggests Capcom has not made many compromises for Nintendo’s system. Therefore, this release brings great news to anyone looking to play these titles on a portable platform.
Digital Launch, Game-Key Card & Future Plans
Initially, Capcom will release all three Resident Evil remakes digitally on October 16. Meanwhile, the company will offer physical versions in January 2027. Capcom has not revealed full details about the retail copies yet. However, expectations point toward the physical versions using Game-Key Cards instead of actual cartridges.
The Switch 2’s Game-Key Cards have sparked controversy among players. Nevertheless, Capcom already leaned on them for Resident Evil Requiem, Street Fighter 6, and Pragmata. As a result, the publisher will likely continue this approach for the foreseeable future.
Looking ahead, Capcom will continue its increased focus on Nintendo in 2027. In fact, the company already confirmed that Resident Evil: Veronica will come to the Switch 2. Furthermore, the game will arrive on Nintendo’s console on the exact same day as other platforms.
This upcoming title will serve as the next remake in the series. Specifically, it will retell the events of ‘Resident Evil – Code: Veronica’, which originally launched on the Dreamcast in 2000. So far, Capcom has revealed very little information about the remake. Additionally, the studio has not announced a specific release window. Consequently, the game could arrive later in 2027, and fans will have to wait to see what Capcom plans next.
