The New York Giants signed outside linebacker Trace Ford from the practice squad to the active roster on Tuesday, completing a series of moves that also included the addition of wide receiver Jason Brownlee to the practice squad.
Ford had exhausted his three standard practice squad elevations for the season, the maximum allowed under NFL rules before a player must be promoted to the 53-man roster to remain eligible for game-day activations.
The undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State was elevated in each of the last three games and contributed on both sides of the ball and on special teams. In his earlier elevations, he logged 19 defensive snaps and 47 special teams snaps, including 16 defensive snaps in the Week 5 win over the Washington Commanders.
He flashed during the preseason, recording a sack, multiple tackles for loss, and quarterback pressures, and earned PFF Team of the Week honors after the finale against the New York Jets.
The promotion provides additional edge depth with Brian Burns sidelined for the season after tearing his ACL. Ford has earned snaps as a rotational piece behind Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux in recent weeks.
The move coincided with the termination of contracts for running back Najee Harris and outside linebacker Jihad Ward, both vested veterans.
Brownlee, who has previous stints with the Jets and Chiefs, joins the practice squad as the Giants continue to manage roster depth entering Week 7.
