The Punjab government just decided to prohibit all hidden-camera gadgets and items fitted with concealed recording devices. Specifically, authorities banned everyday gadgets like pens, eyeglasses, and watches. Ultimately, officials cited severe concerns regarding privacy and the dangerous misuse of personal information.
Punjab Bans Hidden-Camera Gadgets to Combat Covert Surveillance
In a statement released on Monday, the Punjab Home Department explained the primary goal. The move aims to protect citizens from covert surveillance. Particularly, authorities want to safeguard women and children. Furthermore, the department revealed that it had received numerous serious complaints. Criminals were actively using hidden recording devices for illegal surveillance, harassment, and blackmail.
Consequently, the department issued a stern warning. The use, purchase, and sale of spying and covert electronic devices will invite strict legal action. Moreover, illegal use will potentially result in severe penalties. Meanwhile, Punjab Home Secretary Ahmad Javed Qazi spoke to a private media outlet regarding the implementation timeline. He confirmed that authorities will issue a formal notification within a few days. Therefore, officials announced the decision in advance merely to give people enough time to dispose of these prohibited items.
Unregulated Meta Smart Glasses
Simultaneously, the Lahore High Court (LHC) is currently hearing a related public interest petition. This legal challenge directly targets the unregulated import and sale of smart glasses equipped with cameras and microphones. The petition raises massive concerns regarding privacy, personal dignity, and national security.
Finally, the petitioner’s counsel presented alarming evidence to the court. Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses remain widely available online and in local Lahore shops. Alarmingly, vendors are selling these high-tech devices openly, despite Pakistan not being officially listed as a market for the product.
