CHUKAI: An adult male Malayan tapir that strayed into the Petronas Kerteh Golf and Recreation Club (KRGP) was captured and relocated to its forest habitat yesterday.
Terengganu Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director Dennis Ten said four officers from the Kemaman district office carried out the operation after receiving information about the animal at 11am.
He said Perhilitan personnel began the operation at 12.30pm, using a drone to locate the tapir.
"Monitoring revealed that a tapir was in the area before the capture and relocation operation was carried out," he said in a statement.
Dennis said a physical examination found that the tapir was healthy and had sustained no injuries before it was released into the forest.
He said the animal was identified as an adult male Tapirus indicus, measuring about 160cm in length and weighing an estimated 250kg.
