Multiple motorbikes skidded off the coloured surface of Chingrighata and Gariahat flyovers following a spell of rains on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mamata Trinamool’s Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh shared a video of bikes and riders sprawled on the wet, coloured road-top.
“I was driving with my daughter on the Chingrighata flyover and saw the bikes skidding one after the other,” said a Salt Lake resident.
The nature of the injuries suffered by the riders is still not known.
The urban development minister Agnimitra Paul had told The Telegraph Online on Tuesday the colours were not permanent, and could wash off after a spell of heavy rains or remain for four or five months.
One of the general secretaries of the Bengal Congress Ashutosh Chatterjee in a letter to minister Paul and the municipal commissioner and administrator of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Smita Pandey had warned that the colours used could be dangerous for riders and drivers as these have low skid resistance.
Chatterjee said this was bound to happen.
“This is an impractical idea. They went ahead with it without considering the pros and cons. Oil-based colours cannot be applied on asphalt. Instead of repairing the roads, they are busy colouring. They failed to understand the basics,” Chatterjee told The Telegraph Online.
