Rediscovering Christian Unity in Northeast India

Meyu ChangkiriA region’s strength is measured not only by its diversity, but also by its ability to bring that diversity together for a common purpose. Northeast India, with its rich cultural heritage, distinct identities and varied religious traditions, has much to teach us about the possibilities and challenges of living together. For Christians across the region, this raises an important question: what does our shared faith call us to contribute to the unity, peace and well-being of our wider society? This question assumes particular significance as the North East India Christian Council (NEICC) observes its Day of Prayer on 18 October 2026 under the theme “United in Christ, Serving Together,” based on Ephesians 4:3. As the Council approaches its 90th anniversary in 2027, the occasion offers an opportunity not merely to look back on its history, but to reflect on the continuing relevance of Christian fellowship and cooperation in a changing society. The NEICC emerged from a recognition that churches and Christian missions in the region needed a common platform for fellowship and cooperation. Following consultations in Shillong in September 1936, the Assam Christian Council was formally established on 23 November 1937. In 1962, it adopted the name North East India Christian Council, reflecting its wider regional vision. From its early years, the Council brought together Christian bodies from different traditions. Its history also included efforts towards church union, although differences over baptism, episcopacy and church governance prevented agreement on a single institutional structure. Nevertheless, the experience demonstrated that cooperation does not depend on complete uniformity. People and institutions can retain their convictions while working together where their responsibilities and aspirations converge. This remains an important lesson for our time. Christian denominations have their own histories, theological convictions, forms of worship and patterns of governance. These identities deserve respect. Yet they need not become barriers to fellowship. The apostle Paul describes the Church as one body with many members, each having a distinct place and purpose (1 Corinthians 12:12–27). Jesus’ prayer “that they may all be one” (John 17:21) points towards a unity rooted not in institutional sameness, but in a shared commitment to Christ. But what truly unites Christians in Northeast India? Is it only a common concern when our institutions or freedoms are at stake, or is there a deeper bond that should sustain us in every season?Recent concerns surrounding the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) have offered a practical illustration of the importance of collective engagement. Soon after I took over the office of the NEICC, I was called to New Delhi to meet the Union Home Minister regarding FCRA concerns. That experience brought home the importance of having a platform through which the concerns of churches and the people they serve could be conveyed to the appropriate authorities.I have also witnessed Christian MPs and leaders from different political parties and Christian affiliations, alongside bishops and church heads from different traditions and denominations, sitting together, sharing meals and discussing common concerns. They have had opportunities to listen to one another, explore shared responsibilities and consider ways of supporting one another. Such fellowship across political and denominational boundaries has not always been routine. The FCRA issue has created an opportunity for Christians to recognise common ground that might otherwise have remained less visible. There is a lesson here that reaches beyond the immediate issue. A shared concern can bring people to the same table, even when their institutional affiliations, theological convictions or political commitments differ. It does not erase those differences, nor should it. It creates space for dialogue, mutual understanding and responsible cooperation. The question is whether we can sustain this spirit beyond a particular concern or moment. If a common challenge can bring us together, surely our shared faith, our responsibility to our communities and our commitment to the common good can provide an even more enduring basis for cooperation. This is where the NEICC has an important role to play. A single church or denomination, however established, may find it difficult to bring together such a range of voices or to address regional concerns through engagement with government and other agencies. The NEICC provides a platform for dialogue, liaison and collective representation on issues affecting churches and the people they serve. It does not replace the autonomy or identity of its member churches; rather, it enables their distinct voices to contribute to a wider conversation. The value of a regional council should therefore be measured not merely by its history, meetings or membership, but by the relationships it nurtures and the constructive work it makes possible. Its effectiveness depends on trust, participation and communication among member churches and the communities they represent. To value the NEICC is not simply to value an institution. It is to recognise the importance of having a common platform through which concerns can be heard, differences addressed and shared responsibilities pursued. This is particularly relevant at a time when questions concerning the rights, freedoms and institutional life of religious minorities in India are receiving attention. Matters affecting educational institutions, charitable ministries, religious organisations and the communities they serve may require sustained dialogue and engagement beyond the capacity of any single denomination. Constructive representation, informed discussion and respect for constitutional processes are important in addressing such concerns. A common platform can help facilitate these efforts while encouraging responsible relationships with public institutions and other stakeholders. At the same time, the contribution of Christian unity must extend beyond the protection of institutional interests. The Church is called to serve society, stand alongside those in need, encourage peace, uphold human dignity and contribute to the common good. In a region as diverse as Northeast India, this requires relationships that reach across denominational, ethnic and social boundaries. Christian fellowship is most meaningful when it strengthens our capacity to serve others and contributes positively to the wider community. As the NEICC approaches nine decades of service, its anniversary should be more than a commemoration of institutional history. It should be an opportunity to renew the spirit of cooperation that gave birth to the Council and to strengthen its relevance for future generations. The task is not to diminish our differences, but to ensure that they do not prevent us from responding together to concerns that affect our shared life.Ephesians 4:3 calls believers to make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Such unity requires humility, patience, communication and a willingness to work together. It must be practised not only when circumstances compel us, but also in the ordinary rhythms of our common life.As we observe the NEICC Day of Prayer, may we rediscover a unity that is deeper than denominational boundaries and wider than institutional interests. If a common concern can bring us to the same table, surely our shared faith and common responsibility can keep us there. In strengthening our fellowship, we strengthen not only the Church, but also our capacity to contribute to a more peaceful, just and compassionate Northeast India.
