8.5-kg python rescued with tumour, operated for 2 hours in Chhattisgarh

A rescued Indian rock python in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district has undergone surgery to remove a tumour weighing around 200 grams from its mouth. The operation, which lasted more than two hours, was performed after a rescue team noticed swelling near the snake’s throat.

The python is now recovering and remains under close veterinary observation.According to a report by Navbharat Times, the python was rescued from the forests of Surguja by snake rescuer Satyam Dwivedi. During the rescue, the team noticed an unusual swelling near the snake’s throat, which had also affected the appearance of its mouth. The python weighed approximately 8.5 kg at the time. The swelling prompted further examination, and the snake was subsequently taken to an animal hospital in Bilaspur, where veterinary doctors investigated the condition.

Examination revealed a growing tumour

At the hospital, doctors confirmed that the swelling was caused by a tumour. The growth had been increasing in size, raising concerns about the python’s condition. The veterinary team decided to remove the tumour surgically. Doctors cited in the report said the growth posed a risk of cancer if it was not removed. The discovery also underlined why the swelling noticed during the rescue required further investigation.

What initially appeared as an unusual enlargement near the python’s throat was found to be a medical condition that needed surgical intervention.Rather than leaving the growth untreated, the veterinary team proceeded with an operation to remove it.

Operation lasted more than two hours

The surgery required more than two hours, with the doctors taking care during the procedure to remove the tumour from the python’s mouth. The operation resulted in the removal of a growth weighing approximately 200 grams.

Given that the python weighed around 8.5 kg when it was rescued, the tumour represented a substantial growth in relation to the snake’s recorded weight. The procedure was followed by supportive care. According to Navbharat Times, doctors put the python on a drip after the operation and placed it under special observation. The veterinary team is monitoring its condition as it recovers. The report said the python’s health was improving after the surgery, although it continued to require close attention.

Python remains under veterinary supervision

The snake is an Indian rock python, which was rescued from the Surguja forests before being brought to Bilaspur for examination and treatment. The rescue team’s observation of the swelling proved important in identifying the problem. The subsequent examination established that the growth was a tumour, after which doctors decided that surgery was necessary. The operation has since been completed, and the python is recovering under the care of the veterinary team.

Its progress is being monitored following the removal of the tumour and the administration of a drip. While the report does not provide further details about the python’s long-term recovery or when it might be released, it confirms that the animal’s condition had begun to improve after the procedure. The case offers an unusual example of veterinary surgery involving rescued wildlife. In this instance, noticing an abnormal swelling during the rescue led to a hospital examination, the identification of a growing tumour and an operation to remove it.For the rescued python, the immediate focus remains recovery and observation as the veterinary team continues to monitor its condition.
