The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has issued a strong warning that that the region risks squandering a historic opportunity to industrialise its economies if it continues exporting valuable minerals in their raw form while importing expensive finished products. This was the sentiment expressed on Tuesday by SADC Executive Secretary Elias Mpedi Magosi when he challenged governments, mining companies and international investors to urgently transform Southern Africa’s vast mineral resources into competitive manufacturing industries, sustainable employment and meaningful economic opportunities. Magosi made these comments during the third SADC Business Council webinar but cautioned that this opportunity would not remain available indefinitely. Photo: SADC
