Agartala, October 15, 2026: Tripura’s weather forecasting system is set for a major transformation with the upcoming inauguration of a state-of-the-art Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) Station in South Tripura on October 28, 2026. The facility is expected to significantly improve the accuracy and advance warning of extreme weather events, including thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and cyclones, providing crucial support to farmers and strengthening the administration’s disaster management preparedness.
Preparations are in full swing for the inauguration of the radar station, along with several other developmental projects in South Tripura district, by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha.
To review the progress of the preparations, the South Tripura District Administration conducted a high-level review meeting and on-site inspection on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by the District Magistrate of South Tripura, senior district officials, representatives of various line departments, including PWD, Power and Rural Development, and the Head Scientist (Scientist-D) of the Meteorological Centre, Agartala.
During the inspection, officials reviewed the progress of construction work at the radar station, along with the status of approach roads, power connectivity, water supply and preparations for the main stage of the inaugural ceremony.
According to sources, approximately 95 per cent of the construction work has already been completed. The concerned departments have been instructed to complete the remaining work on a war footing within the next week to ensure readiness before the scheduled inauguration.
The meeting also reviewed arrangements for security, traffic management, drinking water, uninterrupted power supply and seating for guests. An action plan was drawn up to ensure effective coordination among the departments concerned and the smooth conduct of the inaugural programme.

Once operational, the Doppler Weather Radar Station is expected to strengthen Tripura’s capacity to monitor developing weather systems and issue timely warnings about potentially dangerous weather conditions. More accurate and advance forecasts will help farmers make informed decisions regarding agricultural activities, crop protection and harvesting, while enabling the administration to take preventive measures, mobilise emergency services and minimise potential damage to lives and property.
The facility is also expected to improve preparedness in vulnerable areas by providing vital meteorological information for planning evacuations, deploying relief resources and responding to weather-related emergencies.
The district administration has reiterated its commitment to completing the remaining work within the stipulated deadline and ensuring the successful inauguration of the radar station and other key developmental projects in South Tripura.
