Rio de Janeiro · Nightlife
Tonight, Monday 12 October 2026, is a national holiday in Rio de Janeiro (Our Lady of Aparecida and Children’s Day), and the city’s best Monday habit is samba: the free roda at the Pedra do Sal from about 6 p.m. and the Samba do Trabalhador at the Renascença Clube in Andaraí, from 5 p.m. Rain is likely early, then clears by 11 p.m. All times are Rio de Janeiro time.

Tonight’s Top 3
1. Pedra do Sal samba roda, in Saúde
The Pedra do Sal is a rock slope in the old port area, in the region known as Pequena África, where, according to local listings, some of Rio’s first samba circles took place in the 19th century. A roda de samba (a circle of musicians playing around a table) takes place there every Monday.
- TonightWeekly series, starting about 6 p.m. (one listing says 7 p.m.). We could not confirm this week’s line-up, and rain is likely at the start.
- GenreSamba, played acoustically with voices, guitars, cavaquinho (a small four-string guitar) and percussion.
- EntryFree. You pay for drinks and food from the street vendors and bars nearby.
- AddressPedra do Sal, Largo João da Baiana, Saúde.
- VerdictThe best-value night in Rio. For foreigners: arrive before 7 p.m. to find a spot, go with a group, and keep to the crowded part of the roda, because the quieter streets around it empty fast.
2. Samba do Trabalhador, with Moacyr Luz, at the Renascença Clube
The Samba do Trabalhador (“the Worker’s Samba”) began in May 2005 at the Renascença Clube in Andaraí and is now one of the best-known samba circles in Rio. It is led by the composer Moacyr Luz and is held every Monday.
- TonightSamba from 5 p.m., ending between about 9 p.m. and 9:45 p.m., depending on the listing. We could not confirm that tonight’s session goes ahead on the holiday.
- GenreTraditional samba, sung by the whole room.
- EntryListed from R$30 (about US$6) by Time Out and Catraca Livre. We could not confirm tonight’s price or whether it is sold out.
- AddressRenascença Clube, Rua Barão de São Francisco 54, Andaraí.
- VerdictThe more organised alternative to the street. For foreigners: it is a seated club night with tables and a bar, so it is easier in the rain, and the crowd mostly sings along in Portuguese.
3. Palavra Cantada, “30 Anos”, at the Vivo Rio
Palavra Cantada is a Brazilian children’s music duo, created by Sandra Peres and Paulo Tatit, and its “30 Anos” (“30 Years”) show is listed for 12 October, Children’s Day. This is a family show, not a late-night event.
- TonightMonday 12 October 2026, 5 p.m. according to the Vivo Rio website.
- GenreChildren’s music.
- EntryWe could not confirm the price or whether tickets remain.
- AddressVivo Rio, Avenida Infante Dom Henrique 85, Parque do Flamengo.
- VerdictA useful holiday option for visitors with children. For foreigners: lyrics are in Portuguese and simple, so younger children follow them easily.

- —Showroom, the drag show, Teatro Rival Petrobras Listed for 12 October at the theatre on Rua Álvaro Alvim 33 in Cinelândia. We could not confirm the time or price.
- —Blue Note Rio, Copacabana We found no show listed for 12 October on the club’s website, so ask the club before you go.
The Night in Context
Monday is a quiet night in Rio’s big halls, and yet it is a night when samba is very local. The crowd at a Monday roda is largely made up of residents, not visitors. That is the reason the Pedra do Sal and the Renascença Clube are on this list, and it is why they are a better introduction to Rio than a tourist show.
A holiday may change the mood. With the day off, more families could be out, and the late-afternoon sessions may fill earlier than on an ordinary Monday. We could not confirm whether tonight’s sessions follow their usual hours, so check before you travel.
Brazil also votes in the presidential runoff on 25 October, 13 days from tonight. Visitors need no papers for tonight’s events, but street closures and queues around polling day can affect transport later this month. Prices in this guide come from listings checked on 12 October and can change at the door.
Practical Notes
- —Transport The holiday timetable applies to the Metro, buses and trains, so services run less often than on a normal Monday. Use Uber or 99 for the Pedra do Sal and the Renascença Clube, and wait inside a bar or club for the car.
- —Rain The chance of rain is highest at the start, at 82 per cent at 6 p.m. The Pedra do Sal is outdoors, so bring a light rain jacket, or go to the Renascença Clube first and walk over later.
- —Cash and cards Street vendors around the Pedra do Sal often prefer cash or Pix (Brazil’s instant payment system), so carry a small amount of cash.
- —Safety Keep phones out of sight, stay in the crowded part of the roda, and avoid the empty streets of the port district late at night.
