Patrick Witt is stepping down as executive director of the White House Crypto Council, and he plans to head for the private sector.
Witt confirmed the move on October 14, 2026. The timing is awkward: the administration’s signature crypto market bill is still parked in the Senate, and no successor has been named.
What happened
Witt led the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, which most people simply call the White House Crypto Council. He took the job in August 2025.
He stepped in after his predecessor, Bo Hines, went back to the private sector. Now Witt is taking the same exit.
Much of Witt’s time in the role went toward the Clarity Act. That bill is meant to set up a federal framework for digital asset markets.
Put simply, the Clarity Act is supposed to tell crypto companies which rules apply to them and who enforces those rules.
The House passed the Clarity Act more than a year ago. The Senate has not followed. The bill has stalled there amid failed procedural votes.
A pattern of departures
Witt is not the first senior crypto official to leave the White House this year. He is the third.
David Sacks departed in March 2026. Harry Jung followed in July 2026. Witt’s October exit completes a set of three in roughly seven months.
The concern is continuity. The Clarity Act talks in Congress remain unresolved, and the official coordinating the administration’s side is now leaving.
How the industry reacted
The Blockchain Association credited Witt with moving key digital asset policy initiatives forward. The group highlighted his role in negotiating the Clarity Act.
It also pointed to his work coordinating the administration’s broader digital asset agenda. That included other legislation such as the GENIUS Act.
Background: a short but busy run
Witt’s stint lasted from August 2025 to October 2026. That is a little over a year in one of the more visible crypto policy jobs in government.
During that period, the Clarity Act cleared the House. The Senate, however, has been a much tougher room. Procedural votes have failed, and the bill has not advanced.
The GENIUS Act was also part of the administration’s digital asset push that Witt helped coordinate, according to the Blockchain Association.
What this means
The biggest thing to watch is who replaces Witt. A long vacancy would send a negative signal at a sensitive moment in congressional negotiations.
Also worth watching: whether the departures stop at three. Sacks, Jung, and now Witt have all left in 2026.
Then there is the Senate itself. The Clarity Act passed the House over a year ago. Until it moves in the upper chamber, the industry’s long-awaited federal market framework stays theoretical, regardless of who holds the council’s top job.
