The third edition of the GymFest Championship, billed as Africa’s premier gymnastics competition, will take place at The Dome, Freedom Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State. on Saturday, November 7.
The event is convened by Tee Tumblers Gymnastics Club and the Society for the Performing Arts in Nigeria. Organisers have unveiled a new identity for the championship and opened the call for athletes, schools and partners.
The previous two editions drew more than 600 athletes, 20 schools and over 60 certified coaches. More than 2,000 spectators watched live, supported by over 20 volunteers, and both editions ended with no incidents.
Schools, clubs and coaches are invited to register their gymnasts, while parents and fans are welcome to attend. Brands seeking to reach young athletes, families and schools can partner with the organisers through the available sponsorship tiers.
Entry is strictly by ticket, with each competing gymnast paying N20,000, while spectators pay N5,000.
Co-convener Yoyin Akpose, who is also founder of Tee Tumblers Gymnastics Club, said the event was meant to widen opportunities for young Nigerians.
“Every child should have the opportunity to participate in gymnastics. There is so much talent in Nigeria that we are not even close to harnessing, and we need to create more awareness and opportunities for these children to thrive,” she said.
“The dream is to create the right structure and standards for gymnastics in Nigeria, so that our young gymnasts can compete internationally and Nigeria can produce more athletes capable of representing the country on the world stage.”
Sarah Boulos, who is chief executive of the Society for the Performing Arts in Nigeria, said the championship thrives on the discipline and international confidence that dedication, arts and athletics build in young people.
“Through dedication, arts, and athletics, we build discipline and international confidence. Every partner who joins us becomes part of an enduring legacy,” the co-convener said.
