The by-election to the reserved women's seat in the 13th parliament vacated by Ferdousy Ahmed Mishti will be held on 12 November, the Election Commission (EC) has announced.
The commission issued a notification on the election schedule today (12 October), signed by EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.
According to the schedule, nomination papers must be submitted to the returning officer at the Election Building by 26 October. The papers will be scrutinised on 27 October, while the deadline for withdrawing candidacy is 1 November.
Mishti was elected to the reserved women's seat with nomination from the BNP.
Under the law, only the BNP can nominate a candidate for the vacant seat. If more than one candidate contests the election, only MPs from the BNP alliance will be eligible to vote.
Reserved women's seats are generally filled through an uncontested election, as the party usually nominates a single candidate.
Mishti resigned following allegations of her involvement in an attack, looting and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Dhaka's Mirpur.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had instructed her to resign over the allegations.
On 1 October, Mishti submitted her resignation to Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad at the Jatiya Sangsad.
