Bahrain has introduced new employment rules allowing foreign workers to temporarily work for other employers for up to 90 days, giving expatriates more flexibility in taking up short-term jobs.
Previously, foreign workers were not allowed to work for companies other than their sponsoring employers. Under the new rules, they can work for another employer as long as they have a valid work permit throughout the temporary employment period.
The new employer will be required to pay an additional fee if its target Bahrainization rate is lower than that of the worker’s current employer. The fee will be determined by comparing the Bahrainization rates of the two companies rather than the type of work being performed.
Employers must also pay an administrative fee of BHD 5 when submitting an application. All temporary employment arrangements must be submitted and managed through the Labour Market Regulatory Authority’s (LMRA) Expat Management System.
The new rules are aimed at making Bahrain’s labor market more flexible by allowing companies to hire foreign workers for short-term assignments without being their original sponsors.
