The Raiders knew the Bills would test their composure on Sunday. Before anyone had a chance to exchange words, Klint Kubiak made sure his players understood the consequences of taking the bait.
Lose your cool, lose your place on the field.
The Raiders coach had identified the possibility of Buffalo players trying to provoke a response. His message was direct: Whatever was said or done, responding in a way that hurt the team would come with a seat beside him.
“We knew going in there were certain guys that were going to try to do that to us, and the players knew before the game that if they got into it, they’d be standing by me on the sideline,” Kubiak said.
That warning became especially relevant when Bills defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected after spitting at Raiders tight end Brock Bowers during Buffalo’s 33-30 victory.
Kubiak did not identify the players included in the Raiders’ pregame discussion. But it’s fair to speculate that Gardner-Johnson was specifically mentioned. The incident was precisely the kind of situation that demanded the restraint Kubiak had emphasized.
Bowers maintained his composure. Gardner-Johnson was sent away.
And the Raiders were able to continue playing without turning an opponent’s misconduct into a problem of their own.
For a team still learning how to consistently handle the details that decide close games, that was worth recognizing, even on another frustrating afternoon.
There were enough mistakes to examine after the loss. This was a moment when the Raiders handled themselves appropriately.
Bowers offered little detail afterward about the confrontation.
“I don’t even know. Just talking a little bit, and then I really don’t know,” he said.
His explanation of the Raiders’ approach was clearer.
“Yeah, I feel like we’re a calm, collected group,” Bowers said. “So I think going out there, we knew what to expect, and we just keep our calm and keep our composure.”
That does not mean the situation was easy to absorb. Being subjected to that kind of behavior presents an obvious emotional test, particularly in the middle of a competitive game.
But the discipline Kubiak demanded required players to think beyond the immediate temptation to respond.
A retaliatory shove or punch could have complicated the sequence, potentially costing the Raiders yardage or a player. Keeping their composure allowed the officials to address Buffalo’s conduct without an additional Raiders response to sort through.
Kubiak declined to characterize the spitting incident because he had not seen it.
“Yeah, I really didn’t see it. I didn’t see it, so I can’t comment on that,” he said.
He was unequivocal, though, when asked whether he and his players were bracing for some Bills shenanigans and were clear on the response.
“Yes, that’s the expectation,” Kubiak said.
Quarterback Kirk Cousins experienced the sequence from a different perspective. While the officials dealt with what had happened, he was occupied with the next play.
“That was another one of those moments where I don’t know what’s going on,” Cousins said. “The refs are just suddenly walking the ball further and further down the field, and I’m getting the next play call.”
He recognized the benefit immediately, even without understanding the circumstances behind it.
“Okay, I know it’s going to be first and 10, much closer than I thought it was going to be,” Cousins recalled thinking.
There was little opportunity to investigate.
“So, I don’t know what happened,” he said. “I just know we got much better field position, and that was really all I had time to think about.”
His account captured the practical value of keeping the focus on football. The Raiders had improved field position and another play to execute. An emotional response could only have jeopardized that advantage.
Composure did not deliver a victory Sunday. The Raiders still left with another narrow loss and more work to do.
But building a dependable team includes establishing how players respond when an opponent tries to pull them outside their responsibilities.
Kubiak set the expectation beforehand. Bowers upheld it when the confrontation arrived.
To his credit, C.J. Gardner-Johnson did not try to explain away what happened.
In a social media post afterward, Gardner-Johnson apologized to his opponent, teammates, organization and supporters, while taking full responsibility for the incident that led to his ejection.
“There is no excuse for my actions, and I take full accountability,” Gardner-Johnson wrote, adding that no matter how emotional or intense the competition becomes, he has to hold himself “to a higher standard.”
He also acknowledged that the gesture toward Bowers was “inappropriate” and “unnecessary,” and said it did not reflect the respect he has for his opponent or the game.
The apology doesn’t erase what happened. Spitting on an opponent crosses a line well beyond normal NFL trash talk and gamesmanship.
But Gardner-Johnson at least owned it afterward, writing that one moment does not define his character and that “my actions will speak louder than my words moving forward.”
And in some ways, that only reinforced the Raiders’ point.
They expected Buffalo to try to provoke them.
Gardner-Johnson lost his composure.
The Raiders didn’t.
