UEFA Champions League: PSG end Barcelona ’s 11-game winning streak

Barcelona’s impressive start to the 2026/2027 season came to an abrupt end on Tuesday night October 20, 2026 as Paris Saint-Germain defeated the Catalan giants 4-2 in a thrilling UEFA Champions League encounter at the Parc des Princes, ending their run of 11 consecutive victories across competitions.

The reigning French champions, coached by former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, delivered a late attacking surge to hand Hansi Flick’s side their first defeat of the campaign in a match that produced six goals, several injury concerns and dramatic swings in momentum.

Barcelona arrived in Paris full of confidence after winning all 11 of their previous matches, scoring freely against domestic and European opponents. Their run included emphatic victories over Elche, Valencia, Rayo Vallecano, Racing Santander and Real Betis, as well as convincing Champions League wins against Feyenoord and Galatasaray. However, against a PSG side determined to assert its authority in Europe, Barcelona’s attacking quality was not enough to compensate for defensive lapses that ultimately proved costly.

Désiré Doué opened the scoring for PSG in the 38th minute before Barcelona fought back through Xavi Espart in the 55th minute. Lucas Hernández restored the hosts’ advantage in the 72nd minute, but Lamine Yamal equalised seven minutes later.

Just when Barcelona appeared to have rescued a point, Vitinha struck in the 81st minute before Fabián Ruiz added a fourth in the 86th minute to seal a deserved victory for the French side.

PSG exploit Barcelona’s defensive weaknesses

The encounter began at a high tempo, with PSG immediately testing Barcelona’s defensive organisation. The hosts created several opportunities in the opening stages, while Barcelona struggled to maintain control whenever the French side pressed aggressively.

PSG came close to taking an early lead when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck the post after Barcelona midfielder Pedri lost possession in a dangerous area.

The home side continued to threaten, forcing Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García into important interventions as the contest developed into an open exchange of attacking moves.

Barcelona also created opportunities of their own, but PSG’s intensity and willingness to attack quickly exposed spaces in the visitors’ defence.

The breakthrough arrived in the 38th minute. After Barcelona lost possession, Doué collected the ball and produced an impressive individual effort before firing a low shot into the net to give PSG a 1-0 lead.

The goal reflected the hosts’ growing confidence and left Barcelona with work to do before the interval.

PSG maintained their advantage at half-time, having created the more dangerous opportunities, although Barcelona remained within reach of a comeback.

Espart and Yamal revive Barcelona ’s hopes

Barcelona returned for the second half with greater urgency and were rewarded 10 minutes after the restart.

In the 55th minute, Fermín López played a well-timed pass into the path of Espart, who drove into the penalty area and finished confidently to restore parity at 1-1.

The goal gave Barcelona renewed belief and shifted the momentum of the contest, with both teams committing players forward in search of another breakthrough.

The visitors subsequently introduced Rodri and Gavi as they sought greater control in midfield, while PSG continued to threaten through quick transitions and their movement in the final third.

The French side came close to scoring when Ferran Torres struck the post, a warning that Barcelona’s defensive problems had not been resolved despite their equaliser.

PSG eventually regained the lead in the 72nd minute. Hernández rose to meet Doué’s delivery from a corner and powered a header into the net, putting the hosts ahead 2-1.

Barcelona responded again through Yamal, who demonstrated his individual quality in the 79th minute. The teenage forward produced a fine finish from a difficult angle on the right to make it 2-2 and revive hopes of extending the club’s unbeaten start to the season.

At that point, the match appeared to be heading towards a tense conclusion, with both sides still searching for a decisive goal.

Vitinha, Ruiz deliver decisive blows

PSG, however, refused to settle for a draw and increased the pressure as the contest entered its final stages.

In the 81st minute, Vitinha found space outside the penalty area and fired a precise shot into the net to restore PSG’s lead at 3-2.

The goal was a significant setback for Barcelona, who had worked hard to recover twice and were now forced to chase the game again.

Five minutes later, PSG struck once more. Achraf Hakimi supplied the ball to Ruiz, who finished from close range in the 86th minute to make it 4-2 and put the result beyond Barcelona’s reach.

The late goals underlined PSG’s ability to capitalise on defensive uncertainty and turn a closely contested encounter into a convincing victory.

Barcelona attempted to respond in the closing minutes, but PSG held firm to secure all three points in front of their home supporters.

Luis Enrique gets the better of former club

The victory carried additional significance for Luis Enrique, who previously managed Barcelona and remains familiar with the club’s footballing philosophy and expectations.

His PSG side demonstrated the attacking aggression and quick combinations associated with his teams, repeatedly testing Barcelona’s defensive structure and exploiting spaces when the visitors pushed forward.

For Enrique, defeating his former club was another important result in PSG’s European campaign. The French champions showed composure after Barcelona twice drew level and responded decisively when the contest threatened to slip away.

The result also reinforced PSG’s position among the leading contenders in the Champions League, although the demanding nature of the competition means that consistency will remain crucial as the campaign progresses.

Barcelona, meanwhile, will have to address the defensive shortcomings exposed in Paris, particularly their difficulty in dealing with transitions, crosses and pressure around the penalty area.

Barcelona’s winning run comes to an end

Before Tuesday’s defeat, Barcelona had enjoyed a remarkable sequence of 11 consecutive victories across competitions.

Their run began with a 5-0 victory over Elche and continued with a 2-0 win against Athletic Bilbao, a 5-2 triumph over Rayo Vallecano and a 5-0 demolition of Valencia.

They also defeated Feyenoord 5-1 in the Champions League, overcame Levante 4-2 and thrashed Racing Santander 7-2. Further victories followed against Sevilla, Getafe, Galatasaray and Real Betis, the latter ending 5-2.

The sequence highlighted Barcelona’s attacking strength, with the team regularly scoring multiple goals and demonstrating the ability to overcome different styles of opposition.

However, the defeat against PSG exposed the other side of their performances: a team capable of creating numerous chances but still vulnerable when opponents attack with pace and precision.

For Flick, the immediate challenge will be to ensure that the loss does not undermine the confidence built during the opening weeks of the season. Barcelona must also find a better balance between their attacking ambition and defensive responsibilities.

Attention turns to the next challenge

The defeat offers Barcelona an opportunity to reassess their approach before the next stage of their campaign. Their attacking players remain capable of troubling elite opponents, but the match in Paris demonstrated that sustained success in Europe requires defensive discipline as well as goals.

For PSG, the victory provides a confidence boost and strengthens their Champions League campaign after another high-profile European performance.

Barcelona’s 11-match winning streak is now history, but the broader significance of the defeat will depend on how Flick’s side responds. Their early-season form has established high expectations, and the challenge now is to recover quickly, correct the mistakes exposed by PSG and maintain their competitiveness on both domestic and European fronts.

Tuesday’s result was a reminder that even a team enjoying an almost flawless run can be undone by an opponent capable of exploiting its weaknesses. At the Parc des Princes, Luis Enrique’s PSG supplied precisely that test, ending Barcelona’s perfect start with a late display of attacking efficiency.
