Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek’s road to the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open championship could get very interesting if she wins her Friday quarterfinal match.
Two potential opponents in front of her in the semifinals and finals could give her trouble for different reasons. Swiatek desperately wants to win this tournament as she is on the fringe for the 2026 WTA Finals in Indian Wells. Points earned from a win in Wuhan would greatly help her cause.

Potential semifinal: Swiatek vs. Maja Chwalinska
Swiatek playing her Polish counterpart and 2026 French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska in the semifinal for the first time in a decade would inject excitement into this tournament that could desperately use some.
Iga won that match, but a lot has changed in 10 years for both players.

Potential final: Swiatek vs. Jelena Ostapenko
If Swiatek finds her way through her side of the draw and Jelena Ostapenko does the same on her side, we could have our first Swiatek vs. Ostapenko match in 2026.
Ostapenko is unbeaten in six meetings against Swiatek. This is one of those rivalries that brings out the best in Ostapenko and causes a stressed Swiatek to struggle.
First things first, Swiatek needs to take care of business against American Ann Li. Li had her career best result, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the Round of 32.
