The 2026 IMF–World Bank Meetings
- Today is the 1st day of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meeting that will go on for the entire week.
More than 15,000 delegates from 191 countries, which means that most if not all of the major 5-star hotels in Bangkok are now fully booked for the convention.
This is the 2nd time that the IMF/World Bank meeting is happening in Thailand, with the last time it was also held at the old Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in 1991.
- Thailand is positioning the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings, taking place from October 12–18, as a historic catalyst to attract global investment, drive advanced technology transfers, and unveil the “Bangkok Blueprint” for secure digital financial infrastructure.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas highlighted that the summit serves as a major turning point to connect multinational executives with local SMEs, emphasizing sustainable growth, clean energy, and strategies to combat financial fraud and scams.
As one of only 3 nations to host the prestigious summit twice, Thailand aims to leverage its neutral middle-power status to act as a “Trusted Connector” for global economic blocs. The event will also feature a special Royal Pavilion highlighting the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy and royal development projects to over 15,000 visiting delegates, cementing the country’s ambitions to become ASEAN’s premier financial hub.
Japan & Turkey are the only other 2 countries to have hosted it 2 times in 80-years history of this institution.
Ekniti is set to showcase Thailand’s leadership on the international financial stage. He will participate in four high-level panel discussions alongside global financial leaders, finance ministers, and top economists, while also holding up to 30 bilateral meetings with global economic figures and international financial institutions to expand economic opportunities and reinforce Thailand’s role as a trusted connector.
A key highlight will be the “Thai MOF Flagship Event: Building Resilience in a Fragmented World” on October 13, 2026. This prominent forum features global leaders such as IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, and Finnish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Riikka Purra, focusing on shaping strategies to build economic resilience amid global conflicts, uncertainties, and risks.
- Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is set to officially open the event at 17:00 hrs. today with various dignitaries heading to the Government House to meet/courtesy call on the Prime Minister.
Today at 09.00 hrs. Desmond Kuek, Chief Executive Officer of Temasek Trust, will pay a courtesy call on the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
Then at 15.30 hrs. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, pays a courtesy call on the Prime Minister
- No protest or gathering of people around various venues
The Royal Gazette has published a Prime Minister’s Office announcement designating the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC), along with 22 delegate hotels and related facilities, as designated control areas for public assemblies. This measure is in place to ensure security and order during the IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings 2026, held in Bangkok from October 12 to 18, 2026.

Authorities emphasized that the directive does not ban public assemblies entirely. Instead, any gatherings within these designated zones must adhere strictly to legal requirements and safety regulations established by the Royal Thai Police to ensure maximum security for international delegates.

- No road closures but beware of bad traffic
Unlike in 1991 when holidays were declared to clear the roads of traffic, 2026 is life as usual for people living in Bangkok, only more worse traffic jams can be expected.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Siriwat Deepor, Spokesperson for the Royal Thai Police, stated that the Royal Thai Police confirms there are no traffic closures, and the public can travel along all routes as usual.

Regarding the news reports and images of an official order issued by the Lumphini Metropolitan Police Station to close traffic, the document is authentic; however, it merely authorizes officers to manage traffic and ensure safety in the event of an emergency or urgent situation along the specified routes, rather than implementing a permanent traffic closure.

- In preparation for the events, Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, welcomed Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), along with over 150 officials, to the Bo Farang Rim Nam community in Bangkok’s Chatuchak District.

The IMF delegation participated in activities such as making notebooks from recycled paper with the “Paper Ranger” group for distribution to children and youth, and assembling relief kits with the SOS Foundation for vulnerable community members. Additionally, they inaugurated the Bo Farang Rim Nam Community Learning Center—renovated from a building that was over 30 years old—and donated digital equipment to support learning for children, youth, and the local community.

- Up to 10 billion Baht to be circulating from spending of these bankers in Bangkok
The government estimates that hosting this event will immediately generate 1.05–2.25 billion Baht in economic circulation. This figure is based on over 15,000 participants staying for an average of 7–10 days, with average daily spending of 10,000–15,000 Baht per person, benefiting the tourism, hotel, and restaurant sectors.
Meanwhile Poj Aramwattananont, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand, stated that the upcoming IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings 2026 will gather over 15,000 global executives. The event is expected to inject approximately 8,000 to 9,000 billion Baht into the Thai economy, driven by participants arriving early and staying after the meetings. Thailand has leveraged the preceding Bangkok Business Summit to demonstrate national readiness, reinforce its image as a safe haven for investment, and promote the core concepts of resilience and recovery.

- Eight prominent Thai business leaders, academics, and government officials are scheduled to speak at the IMF and World Bank Group annual meetings held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok from October 12–15, 2026. Key participants include Kasikornbank CEO Kattiya Indaravijaya, BRANDi CEO Piyachart Isarabhakdee, and former Bank of Thailand governor Veerathai Santiprabhob, who will share insights across high-level sessions on small-business finance, economic transformation, and regional growth.
Beyond standard ministerial roles, Thai representatives will participate in flagship World Bank and IMF discussions covering topics such as digital public finance, artificial intelligence and employment, and global economic resilience. Notable events include the launch of an IMF publication on Asia’s future and the introduction of the “Bangkok Blueprint for Fraud-Resilient Financial Services” aimed at countering technology-enabled financial fraud.

- Scott Bessent, the United States of America Secretary of Treasury, has for the 1st time in the 80-years of history, opted not to attend the IMF/World Bank meeting.
What the implications of the outcome of the meeting is going to be and how the USA reacts or abides by the outcome is therefore going to be anyone’s guess.

- No Confidence Debate to be set for just 3-days
The plans by the opposition to censure the government of Anutin Charnvirakul, could be set for just 3-days and not 5-days as requested by the opposition.
Government Whip Chairman Korrawee Prissananantakul has pushed back against the opposition’s request for a 5-day no-confidence debate, arguing that 3 days are more than enough given that many issues would likely overlap.
The debate could be around late October or early November with Korrawee saysing that he expects the 3-party whip meeting to finalize the schedule by late October or early November, noting that the government is already well-prepared.
When asked whether the opposition’s request for a 5-day debate was excessive, Korrawee expressed that it was indeed too long, noting that 3 days should be sufficient.
He explained that many of the submitted topics are repetitive—such as the Senate collusion issue, which has been widely discussed already—making it difficult to introduce fresh arguments. Ultimately, however, controlling the meeting’s duration rests with the House Speaker.
- Meanwhile, Opposition Leader and People’s Party chief Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut has dismissed the government’s mockery regarding the upcoming no-confidence debate, challenging all 18 targeted ministers to actively stay and listen throughout the proceedings rather than waiting to respond using pre-prepared notes.
The censure list—coordinated alongside MP Rangsiman Rome—is backed by concrete evidence and targets specific wrongdoings rather than arbitrary selections. Natthaphong also urged both government and opposition members to base their final votes strictly on the merits and facts presented during the debate.

Addressing recent internal controversies concerning harsh online commentary by party assistants, Natthaphong stated that while individual communication styles may vary, all members must remain unified under the party’s core goals.
He acknowledged the need for caution in public messaging to prevent controversies from overshadowing substantive political issues, adding that any departures of former members stem from diverse personal reasons rather than political direction.
- Today at 1:30 PM, The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has scheduled a press conference at the NACC Nonthaburi office to address the corruption scandal surrounding the 2025 local government civil service recruitment examinations, commonly known as the “local exam cheating” case, alongside other key issues.
The announcement follows the recent release from Bangkok Special Prison of Pichit Thangphrom, former Director of the Strategy and Budget Division of Wichian Buri Municipality, and Win Thanaphatcharaphokin, both suspects in the local exam corruption case, after the NACC failed to finalize its investigation report to submit to the prosecutors within the mandatory 84-day detention limit. Meanwhile, Sataporn Thanapacharapokin, Win’s sister, had already been released earlier.

- Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploythalay Laksameesaengchan reported significant progress in the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society’s crackdown on illegal online gambling and cybercrime during fiscal year 2026. Utilizing AI technology and police data, court orders were issued to block over 835,000 gambling URLs, with additional platform cooperation bringing the total blocked links to nearly 945,000.
In addition, the Anti-Cyber Scam Centre recorded 5,279 online fraud complaints with losses totaling THB 252 million between September 27 and October 3, representing a slight week-on-week decline. The government reaffirmed its commitment to combating digital crimes through multi-sector collaboration and public tip-offs.
- Social Security Office (SSO) Election Results sees ‘Orange’ Winning
On Sunday, October 11, 2026, the Social Security Office (SSO) held elections for employer and insured-person representatives to serve on the Social Security Board, with voting taking place simultaneously at 5,233 locations nationwide. The atmosphere was lively as eligible employers and insured people turned out to cast their votes.
With nearly 90% of the votes counted in the Social Security Board election, the “Progressive Social Security Team” (Prasakan Sangkhom Kao-na) holds a commanding lead in both the employer and employee categories, while the “Insee Team” led by Panat Thai-luan trails behind. The Social Security Office (SSO) has provided a dashboard allowing the public to track vote-counting results in real-time via the website: https://sbe2.sso.go.th/inter/report/dashboard-sbe0304

Pol. Lt. Col. Wannapong Kotcharak, Permanent Secretary for Labour, announced the figures for those exercising their rights: over 670,000 insured persons participated—a 330% increase compared to 2023—while more than 9,800 employers exercised their rights, marking a 512% rise from the previous year. Overall, total participation exceeded the 2023 figures by 331%.
Regarding the unofficial election results, a specific announcement time cannot yet be set; the election took place at over 5,200 locations—a vast number—with high voter turnout at many sites. Consequently, the process requires meticulous handling and a considerable amount of time for vote counting.

- Sustarum Thammaboosadee, a Social Security Board candidate representing the Progressive Social Security Team, led both employer and insured-person candidates in a press conference to thank voters nationwide. Securing a dominant 14 out of 21 board seats, the team emphasized that the landslide voter turnout—significantly higher than in 2023—reflects public demand for genuine benefit-focused reform rather than superficial handouts like calendars.
Sustarum stated that the newly expanded majority will work to boost investment efficiency, ensure reasonable pensions for the elderly, prevent any child from going hungry, and collaborate with Labour Minister Julapun Amornvivat, stressing that this victory is the first step toward transforming the nation’s largest fund into a system that truly belongs to everyone.
Within the first seven days of taking office, the team plans to publicly disclose meeting records, address corruption issues including a missing 3-billion-Baht fund, and halt wasteful spending such as annual 500-Baht calendar production budgets. Backed by a 1-to-2-year roadmap, the 14 elected members will push for zero-based budgeting and strict accountability for past irregularities.

- Panat Thailuan —an employer who arrived in a wheelchair to vote—gave an interview stating that the election process had met expectations, though the outcome—victory or defeat—was a separate matter.
He remarked that this election differed from the one held two years ago, noting a clear intent to seize control of the fund and criticizing the opposition as mere political party proxies—likening them to “babes in arms.” He asserted that if he were to face one of these “babes” in a one-on-one contest, securing even 100 votes would be an impressive feat for them, whereas in reality, they were relying on the prestige of a political party.

Economic News
- Govt Officials could Retire as early as 50 years of age
Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapan revealed that the government is finalizing the new civil servant early retirement criteria, which will primarily target officials aged 50 and above. Officials aged 40 and over may also apply under specific circumstances, such as caring for parents or health issues, subject to supervisor approval.
The scheme aims to reduce the overall workforce by 5% annually, with the first phase expected to cost approximately 7 billion Baht funded through the central budget and is projected to roll out within fiscal year 2027.
In addition, following the dissolution of the Land Bank Administration Institute, the Cabinet resolved to transfer its 48 personnel to the National Land Policy Committee (NLPC) to accelerate the long-delayed “One Map” project. Pakorn also noted that over his past six months in office, the legal-affairs team has successfully fulfilled all designated government policy targets regarding legislation and regulatory streamlining.

- Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn plans to amend Thai Airways’ ground handling and cargo service contracts at Suvarnabhumi Airport to add financial penalties after a major baggage and cargo backlog on September 26–30.
The two contracts have 15 years remaining but contain no penalty clauses. Phiphat said the changes would bring them into line with contracts for other service providers. The Transport Ministry will discuss the proposal with Airports of Thailand, Thai Airways and the Finance Ministry. As of October 8, 80 bags remained whose owners could not be identified. Phiphat said any decision to suspend Thai Airways’ chief executive rests with the airline’s board and the Finance Ministry.

- On Friday, October 9, the SET Index closed at 1,577.65 points, up 7.04 points (0.45%), with a trading value of 53,542.67 million Baht. The index traded in positive territory throughout the day, albeit in a sideways pattern. Investment sentiment improved as the US 10-year government bond yield eased to around 5.2%. Standout performers included the power plant sector—led by GPSC, BGRIM, and GULF—boosted by falling bond yields, a strengthening Baht, and speculation regarding developments in the data center sector. However, market upside remains limited as investors await third-quarter 2026 earnings results from listed companies; the banking sector is set to begin releasing reports this week, alongside earnings previews for companies across various other sectors.
Today’s market outlook suggests continued momentum for recovery, driven by expectations of an upward revision to Thailand’s GDP forecast during the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings, which Thailand is hosting. Additionally, the revision of the Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) calculation method—incorporating the electronics sector—may better reflect Thailand’s manufacturing landscape and potentially lead to a review of GDP estimates.
Meanwhile, the market is also monitoring progress on import tariff negotiations with the United States. The index range is estimated with support at 1,560 points and resistance at 1,600 points.

- Social media posts recently revealed the abandoned condition of the JKN Empire building in Samut Prakan, showing a stripped interior and wrecked cars left in the parking lot. Originally built in 2016 for New18 TV with a 250-million-Baht investment, the facility was acquired by JKN Group in 2021 to operate JKN18, which permanently ceased broadcasting on January 26, 2026, due to its parent company’s bankruptcy.

The Specialized Appeal Court dismissed JKN’s rehabilitation petition in late December 2025, leading to its delisting from the Stock Exchange over fraudulent financial reporting. Meanwhile, former executive Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip or Anne Jakkaphong fled Thailand to Mexico with an estimated 6 billion Baht converted into cryptocurrency after skipping her court hearing, where she received a 2-year prison sentence for debenture fraud.

On October 9, 2026, the Royal Gazette officially published an absolute receivership order against JKN Global Group, following a Central Bankruptcy Court directive from August 25. This legal action grants the Official Receiver exclusive authority over the company’s business operations and assets.
Creditors must file their debt repayment claims with the Official Receiver within two months of the October 1 publication date. Furthermore, anyone currently holding JKN’s assets or owing money to the firm is legally required to report them within one month to avoid penalties.
- The Secretariat of the Prime Minister has issued an urgent letter demanding an explanation from the NBTC Secretary-General regarding the office’s decision to call board meetings on October 1–2, 2026, under the directives of NBTC Chairman Sarana Boonbaichaiyapruck. The inquiry follows the Central Administrative Court’s dismissal of Sarana’s lawsuit, which upheld the nomination committee’s ruling that he lacked the required qualifications and had forfeited his position from the beginning.
The letter highlights that filing a lawsuit does not suspend the enforcement of an administrative order unless ordered otherwise by the court. Consequently, the Prime Minister, exercising authority under the Frequency Allocation Act, ordered the NBTC Secretary-General to clarify the justification behind scheduling the meetings despite the court ruling, ensuring transparency in the agency’s operations.

- E-Saan Poll, conducted by Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Economics, revealed that household economies in the Northeast remained heavily strained during the third quarter of 2026, with little expectation of recovery in the fourth quarter. Citizens reported persistent pressures from high living costs, reduced incomes, and rising agricultural expenses, rating their financial status and the government’s economic performance in Q3 at 4.78 and 4.85 out of 10, respectively.

High living expenses and sluggish purchasing power remain the top urgent issues respondents want the government to address. While nearly 44% of participants expressed satisfaction with the “Thai Chuay Thai Plus” stimulus project, a significant majority noted that they have yet to see standout achievements from any specific economic ministry, highlighting the ongoing need for tangible income-boosting measures. 34.7% of respondents felt no economic ministry showed standout achievements over the past three months. Key ministries—including Labour, Finance, Industry, Energy, and Transport—each garnered under 5%. The results highlight that the government’s economic performance remains largely unnoticeable to much of the public.

Floods in Thailand
- Brace for Showdown of locals’ vs Authorities
Kamnan Baan (head of the villages) in Pathum Thani province are set to try to open the flood gates to release the water that has been flooding in the area for weeks now.
There is no word on how the negotiations will go and what the impact may be after the flood gates are opened.
If these flood gates are opened it may impact Bangkok and could flood many areas of the city.
- Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has instructed the Department of Rural Roads (DRR) to accelerate the assessment and repair of roads damaged by nationwide flooding, with plans to request central government funds for permanent repairs once water levels recede. Speaking at the DRR’s 24th anniversary, he also urged the swift disbursement of the fiscal 2027 budget exceeding 45.8 billion Baht to drive transport infrastructure development across all 77 provinces and stimulate the economy.

The DRR announced that it will advance key initiatives in fiscal 2027, including the Thailand Riviera coastal road project—specifically launching construction on the Phetchabun-Prachuap Khiri Khan section—along with other vital network expansions. These efforts aim to enhance regional connectivity, boost tourism, and sustainably improve public safety and mobility.
- The government has issued an urgent warning for residents in 15 provinces across 29 districts to remain on high alert for flash floods and landslides from October 11 to 13. Identified high-risk areas span the North, Central, and Southern regions—including provinces such as Tak, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Yala—following heavy rainfall and continuous cumulative precipitation tracked by the Department of Mineral Resources.

The Thai Meteorological Department has issued its 10th weather warning regarding severe conditions across the country, effective until October 13, 2026. The unstable weather—featuring thunderstorms, strong gusts, and heavy to very heavy downpours—is driven by a cool air mass from China moving over upper Thailand, combined with a monsoon trough and easterly winds spanning the southern regions and the Gulf of Thailand.
- The Royal Irrigation Department has announced a gradual reduction in the water discharge rate from the Chao Phraya Dam, starting at 10:00 AM on October 11. The rate reduced from 2,100 cubic meters per second by 10 cubic meters per second each hour until it reaches 2,000 cubic meters per second by 8:00 PM at which point the rate will be maintained.

- The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported that flooding continued to affect more than 3.14 million people in 21 provinces and Bangkok as of October 11, 2026. Authorities were accelerating drainage and recovery operations while preparing for further heavy rain. 1,126,853 affected households, comprising 3,144,421 people. Its update listed flooding across 100 districts, 819 subdistricts and 6,201 villages.
Bangkok had about 329,000 flood-affected households and four reported deaths, according to the DDPM update. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration(BMA) announced the end of the flood disaster situation in an additional 30 districts, effective October 9, 2026. This brings the total number of districts declared safe from the public disaster to 42. However, eight remaining districts are still actively being managed and monitored. These include Khlong Sam Wa, Bueng Kum, Prawet, Min Buri, Lat Krabang, Saphan Sung, Sai Mai, and Nong Chok.
- NIDA Poll survey titled “Bangkok Floods: Who Deserves Praise?”, conducted among 1,310 eligible voters across all 50 districts in Bangkok, revealed that rescue foundations, volunteer organizations, and charities received the highest commendation at 45.95%. Interestingly, 30.23% of respondents stated that no one deserved praise. They were followed by the Bangkok Governor 16.41%, the Governor’s team 11.22%, social media pages providing live updates 10.38%, the military 9.62%. Meanwhile the Prime Minister, the Cabinet, flood relief ministers, and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) each received less than 2% of total praise.

Regarding lessons learned from major flooding events, the public expressed significant skepticism about future flood management by involved agencies and officials. The largest group, 38.55%, believed that authorities learned lessons but would still be unable to prevent or solve flooding in the future.

- Meanwhile Suan Dusit Poll conducted a nationwide survey regarding the “2026 Floods.” When asked to rate the performance of various individuals and agencies in handling and resolving the flooding (out of a maximum of 10 points), the results were as follows:
Local military personnel 6.37 points
The Bangkok Governor 5.44 points
The DDPM 4.74 points
Governors of affected provinces 4.63 points
The opposition 4.56 points
The Royal Irrigation Department 4.35 points
Local MPs 4.23 points
The TMD 4.19 points
The government 3.34 points
The Prime Minister 3.08 points
When asked about the root causes behind the substandard disaster response, respondents pointed to major operational shortcomings across multiple areas. A vast majority—74.80%—blamed delayed and ineffective emergency warning systems.

General News
- Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, presided over the annual “Um Phra Dam Nam” (Ceremony of Carrying the Buddha Image into the Water) at the Wat Bot Chana Man pier in Mueang Phetchabun District, Phetchabun Province. Held from October 8 to 17, this sacred ritual is a cherished local tradition that has been observed for over 400 years, serving to promote tourism and generate income for the people of Phetchabun.

The Deputy Prime Minister and his spouse also paid homage to “Phra Phuttha Maha Thammaracha”—the sacred Buddha image revered as the spiritual heart of Phetchabun—to seek blessings for the nation and its people.

- The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) clarified guidelines for inspecting checked baggage, effective October 16, 2026, as part of aviation safety measures. Under these regulations, security officers may open and inspect checked luggage if screeners detect irregularities or suspicious items. CAAT assured that all inspection procedures will follow strict safety protocols and maintain verifiable evidence, allowing passengers to request official reviews if items are missing or if improper conduct is suspected.
Passengers are advised to refrain from packing prohibited items, valuables, fragile objects, or important documents in their checked luggage. To minimize the risk of bag damage during potential searches, CAAT recommends using TSA-compliant locks. The authority reiterated that luggage inspections will be conducted strictly on a necessary basis when reasonable grounds for suspicion exist.
