Dengue claimed 10 more lives across Bangladesh in the 24 hours to 8:00am on Thursday, October 15, while 1,943 patients were hospitalised with the mosquito-borne disease, taking the country’s cumulative hospital admissions to 107,259 this year.
The latest figures from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) showed that the national death toll from dengue reached 331 since January 1, underscoring the continuing public health challenge as infections spread across the country.
Of the 1,943 newly hospitalised patients, 432 were reported in Dhaka Division outside the two city corporations, 256 in Chattogram Division, 234 in Khulna Division and 230 in Rajshahi Division, according to the DGHS.
The report also recorded 237 admissions in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), 177 in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), 195 in Barishal Division, 70 in Rangpur Division, 11 in Sylhet Division and 10 in Mymensingh Division. The figures listed in the report do not fully reconcile with the national total.
The latest daily deaths brought the cumulative toll to 331, while the total number of patients hospitalised since the beginning of the year reached 107,259, according to the DGHS’s daily dengue bulletin.
Chattogram has emerged as a major area of concern, with 1,288 dengue cases recorded during the first 14 days of October. The rising caseload has left the dengue ward at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) struggling to accommodate patients, forcing some to receive treatment on the floor.
The district recorded 98 new cases and two deaths in the 24 hours until 9:00pm on Tuesday, according to the district civil surgeon’s office. The cumulative number of dengue cases in Chattogram reached 5,754, with 28 deaths recorded this year.
At CMCH, the designated 50-bed dengue ward was treating 91 patients during a visit on Tuesday. The patients included 52 men and 39 women. With all beds occupied, some patients had to be accommodated on the floor, highlighting the strain on available treatment facilities.
The outbreak has continued into October following a particularly deadly September. The month recorded 148 dengue deaths and 43,774 hospital admissions nationwide, making it the deadliest month of the year so far.
The rising number of infections has placed pressure on healthcare facilities in different parts of the country. Hospitals are continuing to receive new patients as health authorities monitor the spread of the disease and the demand for treatment.
The DGHS data also showed that 101,031 patients had recovered and been discharged by October 15. The remaining figures reflect the scale of the treatment burden facing hospitals as the outbreak continues.
With more than 107,000 hospital admissions and 331 deaths recorded this year, the latest figures show that dengue remains a nationwide health concern requiring continued attention from health authorities and local administrations.
