The Florida State Seminoles fell in double overtime to the Miami Hurricanes. The two teams went back and forth with two late touchdowns to send the game to overtime. In the end Miami held on to continue their undefeated season while the Seminoles again allowed victory to slip thrift their hands.
The slugfest set social media abuzz but not because it was another instant classic in a long, storied rivalry. It wasn’t the fight of the underdog Seminoles or the future of Mike Norvell that took center stage or that Miami stayed undefeated on a day that saw so many upsets. No, all of that took a backstage to the final Florida State offensive play(s).
The Seminoles (3-4, 1-3 ACC) had a go-ahead touchdown on fourth down against Miami, and then a holding flag took it off the board. One snap later, a contested ball in the end zone went the Hurricanes’ way, and the Seminoles left Miami Gardens with a loss.
Here’s what people online made of the last two plays.
The Florida St offensive holding call was not a foul.

The contact by the BYU defender was defensive pass interference.
Florida State got robbed. Left Tackle just traps the rusher’s long arm and gets called for a holding. TD is wiped off the board pic.twitter.com/urC0aB0cal

1. it wasn’t a hold on the first FSU TD
— Warren Sharp (@SharpFootball) October 18, 2026
2. FSU player has 2 hands on ball while down but ball is in lap of Miami player, who doesn’t actually appear to have both hands on the ball
simultaneous possession? pic.twitter.com/J1MD8e7YTW
This was deemed a holding penalty on Florida State’s first 4th down touchdown.

Absolute disgrace to the sport. pic.twitter.com/CziMzJAcPF
Florida State-Miami might be playing the greatest game of all time.

Update: refs ruined an all time finish with a holding call.
Refs should be arrested for what they just did to the Florida State Seminoles.

FSU got jobbed twice.

That flag against FSU looked….suspect. Yeesh. Brutal way to change the end of a game.

Miami/FSU
— Jordan Rodgers (@JRodgers11) October 18, 2026
1) Terrible holding call
2) Miami defender is still grasping for the ball with his left hand over the top of the FSU WRs hands. That was an FSU TD.
FSU got hosed.
Also…that was PI at the end of ND/BYU. Have to throw a flag there.
Refs affecting way too many game…
I thought it was a TD catch. https://t.co/9Td5QUjxxD

That might be the worst holding call in the history of college football.

I’ve never seen a team complete back to back Hail Mary’s and still lose https://t.co/jijdNA2DuS
— Bordeaux (@bordeauxyt) October 18, 2026
The worst holding call of the year.
— Three Tech Pod 🎙 (@ThreeTechPod) October 18, 2026
How on earth do officials not understand THIS is a tackle winning his rep? @colecubelicpic.twitter.com/15XXlgQEBr
They’re acting like this was clear and obvious. I dunno man. That looked like an FSU catch. It looked to me like it was in Bryce’s stomach but with Duce’s hands on the ball.
— 💫🅰️♈️🆔 (@ADavidHaleJoint) October 18, 2026
Florida State got jobbed. Appreciate the transparency from the ACC replay center, but they were doing all they could to upheld the call. No mention of simultaneous possession; really didn’t take their time. Just feel gross watching that back. Yuck.
— Sam Neumann (@Sam_Neumann_) October 18, 2026
Zebras ruin an instant classic … FSU earned the right for a two point conversion on a Hail Mary only for it to be called back on a phantom holding call!!!! Absolutely atrocious
— Su’a Kristopher Cravens (@SuaKCravens) October 18, 2026
Still can’t get over the way FSU-Miami ended.

— GhettoGronk (@ghetto_gronk) October 18, 2026
Man, Florida State has to be absolutely gutted right now. That wasn’t holding. It just wasn’t. And then to come within an inch or two of tying it up on the very next play? Brutal way to lose a football game.

The last team we saw get robbed as bad as Florida State did tonight was

Florida State https://t.co/VnrWM0R1Yx
I’m not sure I have ever seen a group of officials protect a team quite like that

The refs in The last 2 finishes, BYU-ND and Miami-FSU have been very questionable
— Beanie Wells (@BeanieWells26) October 18, 2026
Was that a touchdown for FSU??
— Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) October 18, 2026
The Miami DB’s hand came off the ball on the way down, it should not have been an interception #miami#fsupic.twitter.com/OSp1pIrh4H
