KINGSTON — For four straight seasons, Lily Lengyel has served as the ace of Scranton Prep’s dominant girls singles lineup.
Each year, though, her greatest accomplishments have come as a doubles player.
On Wednesday afternoon, teaming with her third partner, Lengyel and Adithi Velaga won the District 2 Class 2A Doubles Championship. It is the fourth gold medal for Lengyel, who gained an opportunity to repeat as the PIAA champion. She won the title last season with Emma Cuck, who graduated in the spring.
The Classics tandem defeated Wyoming Seminary’s Lizzie Weaver-CeCe Pons, 6-0, 6-1, at the Empower Sports Academy.
“This is so special to me,” said Lengyel, who won with Alyssa Wigley in 2023 and 2024, and Cuck last season. “I love playing doubles. This is a huge blessing for me. Adithi is an awesome player. I went into this very excited.
“We started a little nervous because we never played doubles before, but as soon as we got going, we really connected and got into a good groove.”
While Lengyel punched her fourth straight ticket to Hershey, the Abington Heights team of Amishi Amit and Sammy Rosenstein defended its District 2 Class 3A title.
For the fourth straight season, two Abington Heights teams battled for the gold. Amit, who played No. 3 singles during the season, and Rosenstein defeated Kate Arp-Margot Rubner, 6-1, 6-1.
The PIAA Championships start Nov. 6.
“It’s honestly amazing,” Amit said. “Sammy and I have been partners since freshman year. We got to states last year, and we didn’t do as well as we wanted. Now we get a chance to redeem ourselves.
“We were locked in from the beginning. We were going to come home with the title.”
Lengyel, who reached the district semifinals in singles, and Velaga, the Classics’ No. 2 singles player, reached the final, beating Wyoming Seminary’s second team of Katie Zhang-Kate Minella, 6-1, 6-0.
Weaver-Pons defeated Montrose’s Anna Evans-Erin Tillotson, 6-2, 7-5.
Scranton Prep’s players were familiar with the Wyoming Seminary pairing. They met in the District 2 Class 2A team championship final; Scranton Prep won, 3-2.
Lengyel and Adithi used power and precision to claim the gold medals.
“I am very excited,” Velaga said. “We played really well. Having Lily there, she is a veteran and won a state gold last season and was the biggest confidence builder for me. I am really looking forward to states.”
In Class 3A, Amit-Rosenstein beat West Scranton’s Chiara Pugliese-Marissa Shafer, 6-3, 6-0. Arp, a District 2 Class 3A singles tournament finalist, and Rubner powered past North Pocono’s Anna Clementoni-Cameron Forgione, 7-5, 7-5, rallying to win both sets.
Amit and Rosenstein, both seniors, used their familiarity as a doubles team to win the gold.
Their win clinched Abington Heights’ fourth straight clean sweep of district tennis championships. The Lady Comets won the team title, and freshman Addie Stark won the singles gold.
“It is so cool to have the opportunity to come back with the partner who I won with last year,” said Rosenstein, who partnered with Rubner during an undefeated regular season. “That can be tough. We knew coming in that we were going to have tough matches with West (Scranton) and our teammates.
“We knew what we wanted, and we knew the strategy that we needed, and we were able to win the title again.”
