LASK 3-6 Liverpool – Champions League Final Word
Liverpool travelled to Austria looking to show the footballing world that they could attack, create chances and score goals after a painful 3–0 defeat against Manchester City at the weekend.
Andoni Iraola’s side certainly delivered on the attacking front, producing six goals in an entertaining Champions League encounter against LASK. Bradley Barcola stole the headlines with a clinical hat-trick, while Lewis Koumas, Ronald Araújo and Jeremie Frimpong also found the net in a performance that offered plenty of encouragement for the weeks ahead.
However, the three goals conceded after Liverpool had established a commanding advantage served as a reminder that this team still has considerable defensive work to do.
The result was emphatic; the attacking football was encouraging, but the second-half collapse in defensive concentration will concern Iraola.

First Half
The first half was an excellent response to the disappointment of the Manchester City defeat, with Liverpool playing at a far greater tempo and showing the attacking intent that Iraola wants to establish as a defining feature of his side.
The Reds dominated possession, moved the ball quickly and repeatedly looked to exploit the spaces available in the final third. The combination of Barcola, Koumas and Ngumoha provided pace and directness, while Florian Wirtz operated intelligently behind the front line.
The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute when Ronald Araújo powered home a header from Kostas Tsimikas’s corner. It was an important moment for the Uruguay international, who continues to make a strong case for a permanent future at Liverpool.
Just two minutes later, Barcola doubled the advantage. Lewis Koumas supplied the assist, with the French winger showing the instincts and composure required to finish clinically.
Barcola was not finished there. In the 37th minute, he added his second of the evening after excellent awareness from Wirtz created another opportunity.
Liverpool went into the interval firmly in control, with three goals, plenty of attacking movement and a performance that looked a world away from the struggles against City.
Second Half
Liverpool picked up where they had left off after the restart.
Frimpong made it 4–0 in the 51st minute, finishing after another excellent delivery from Tsimikas. The Dutch full-back’s willingness to attack was rewarded, and Liverpool appeared to be cruising towards a comfortable European victory.
However, the game changed dramatically after the hour mark following some substitutions.
LASK pulled one back through Robert Ljubicic in the 63rd minute, only for Barcola to complete his hat-trick in the same minute, assisted by Frimpong.
Koumas then made it 6–1 in the 72nd minute, again benefiting from Frimpong’s contribution.
At that stage, Liverpool’s attacking work had been outstanding. But the defensive structure began to deteriorate, particularly following the substitutions that saw Jacquet and Araújo withdrawn.
Florian Flecker scored in the 74th minute and again in the 77th, both goals assisted by Yvan Dibanjo. Suddenly, a commanding performance had become a far more uncomfortable closing period.
Liverpool still won by three goals, but conceding twice in quick succession after establishing such a substantial lead was disappointing. The changes provided opportunities for fresh legs, but the team lost some of its earlier organisation and control.
Iraola will be pleased with the attacking output, but he will not want his side repeating that defensive looseness in more demanding European fixtures.
Final Thoughts
This was a solid attacking performance and an important response to the Manchester City defeat.
Liverpool created 26 shots, recorded an xG of 3.34 and scored six goals away from home. Barcola’s hat-trick was the headline, while Koumas continued to demonstrate his work rate and finishing ability. Wirtz showed greater creativity, Frimpong was a constant threat going forward and Araújo added another dimension from set pieces.
The youngsters also took their opportunity. Nyoni helped provide a midfield platform, Ngumoha showed flashes of his ability and Jacquet continued to look like a defender with an enormous future.
But Liverpool cannot ignore the three goals conceded.
The attacking cohesion was encouraging, yet the defensive collapse after the substitutions showed that Iraola still has work to do in maintaining concentration and structure across the full 90 minutes.
There is plenty to build on, and the result gives Liverpool confidence heading into the weekend’s Premier League trip to Brentford. Barcola will travel with renewed belief, Koumas has strengthened his case for more opportunities, and the team has shown that it can create chances in abundance.
Now the challenge is to combine that attacking quality with greater defensive discipline.
Six goals is an excellent return. Conceding three is a warning.
