What's next for Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. following the Jacksonville Jaguars' Week 6 game against Houston?
For much of the season, Thomas Jr.'s contributions on offense have been sporadic, as he was seemingly slowly phased out. But now, any hope of him emerging as a steady big-play threat and go-to target seems lost.
In that Houston game, Thomas Jr. would play only 15 offensive snaps, including none in the second half. On the season, he has nine receptions on 18 targets for 105 yards and a score. Over the last two games, Thomas Jr. has no catches.
"Week to week. Guys have to step up and make plays," Coen said of Thomas Jr. after the Houston game, via ESPN.
So where does this leave the Jaguars and Thomas Jr.?
Throughout the early portion of the season, reports from NFL insiders have suggested that teams are monitoring this situation in Jacksonville. However, those same reports have also said that the Jaguars don't have any real interest in moving on from Thomas Jr. either.
But that was before Thomas Jr. played 15 snaps against the Texans. How he works his way back into a regular role remains to be seen, especially with Travis Hunter potentially earning more snaps, the emergence of Josh Cameron, and the Jaguars' usage of two tight end sets.
The Jaguars don't have to trade Thomas Jr. just for the sake of doing so. They can let things play out. That said, perhaps Jacksonville will be more willing to have those conversations after this past Sunday's game.
