Even a month ago, Abishek Porel’s career seemed to be in jeopardy because of off-the-field events. However, head coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla and the Cricket Association of Bengal continued to back him, giving the keeper-batter the support he needed during those hard times.
He found a place in the Ranji Trophy squad and now seems to be doing well in untying the knots, which may give his young career a new boost.
Porel vindicated their faith placed in him, coming up with a century (114 batting) and stitching an unbeaten 199-run stand for the fourth wicket with fellow centurion Sudip Gharami (122 batting) to place Bengal in the driving seat in the ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Delhi.
At Stumps on Day II of their season opener, at the Bengal Cricket Academy ground in Kalyani, vice-captain Gharami and Porel took Bengal to 304/3 as they lead by 60 runs going into the third day. Given the current situation, unless there’s a massive goof-up on Tuesday, Bengal should finish the game with three points at least.
Gharami, like captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, is a mainstay of the Bengal batting. With Easwaran dismissed even after being set, a lot relied on his deputy Gharami to make sure Bengal crossed Delhi’s first-innings total of 240.
All eyes were on Porel then as he went out to bat, with Bengal still 135 behind.
With the spotlight fixed on him, the pressure on Porel was evident. But a steady Gharami at one end kept egging Porel on, even after he was dropped on 2 and 23. And once Porel unshackled himself, each shot seemed like an effort in regaining lost ground.
The 23-year-old was stuck at 99 for almost 20 minutes or so. And when he finally brought up his second first-class hundred, there were tears in his eyes.
Called up at the last moment, Porel barely had proper practice sessions going into this game. From that perspective as well, this innings of his certainly stands out.
Gharami’s stoic batting also helped Porel.
“For the last two years, I wasn’t getting a hundred in Ranji. Alongside that, I suffered injuries, while there were ups and downs as well in my personal life.
“But those tough times and periods made me mentally stronger, and I realised that cricket is the only way I can keep doing my job,” a relieved Porel said.
“I will always be grateful to Laxmida, Sourav Ganguly and the rest (in the CAB) for their unwavering support. Our head coach, in particular, for getting bowlers and arranging those vital hours of practice for me...”
Porel also thanked India batters Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Delhi Capitals’ Ashutosh Sharma for keeping in touch during those difficult times.
Brief scores: Delhi 240. Bengal 304/3 (Sudip Gharami 122 batting, Abishek Porel 114 batting; Ayush Badoni 1/37). At Stumps, Day II.
