01Getting Around
Mexico’s Pacific coast: Hurricane Trudy. Mexico activated a hurricane watch (hurricane conditions are possible within about 48 hours) from north of Punta San Telmo, in Michoacán, to Playa Pérula, in Jalisco, south of Puerto Vallarta. The US National Hurricane Center projects that Trudy could become a major hurricane (Category 3 or stronger) on Friday and approach the coast on Saturday 17 October.
Heavy rain that can cause floods and landslides is forecast for Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco over the weekend. Reports differ on the storm’s exact strength and distance from the coast, and we could not read the latest official bulletin this morning, so treat the details as likely to change. Simón, which weakened offshore earlier this week, is a separate storm, and we have no current bulletin on it.
If you live or travel between Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta, check your airline and your hotel today, and follow local civil protection orders first. Our Trudy report and our checklist for foreigners set out what to prepare.
Panama: schools and daily routines. Panama’s education ministry (Meduca) said a gradual reopening of public schools would begin on Wednesday 14 October, once safety inspections are done. We have not confirmed how many schools opened. On Tuesday 13 October, Minister Ventura Vega counted 619 damaged schools and 35 destroyed schools after the 9 October earthquake, according to Telemetro.
Not every building opens on the same day. Ask your child’s school which building is open and when, because the reopening depends on each inspection.
Brazil: loud weeks, normal days. Campaigning continues until the runoff on Sunday 25 October, 9 days away. Most foreign residents cannot vote.
02Cost of Living & Money
Each measure is labelled, and dates differ by country. Brazil’s PTAX, Colombia’s TRM and Argentina’s rates are official or public-service quotes; Mexico, Peru and Chile are Thursday market closes from EODHD, a market-data provider, not official fixings.
Brazil. The PTAX fixing (the central bank’s reference dollar rate) was 5.0521 reais to sell on Thursday 15 October, after 5.0441 on Wednesday 14 October. At 5.0521, R$1,000 is about US$198.
Mexico. The dollar closed at 18.414 pesos on Thursday 15 October, down from 18.497 on Wednesday 14 October. It is not the official FIX rate (Banxico’s daily reference rate), and at 18.414, MXN 10,000 is about US$543.
Chile. The market close was 981.2 pesos per dollar on Thursday 15 October, a market-data quote, because we could not read the central bank’s observado (its reference rate) this morning. At 981.2, CLP 1,000,000 is about US$1,019.
Colombia. The TRM (the official representative rate) is 3,170.46 pesos per dollar for Friday 16 October, down from 3,197.65 for Thursday 15 October, according to the financial regulator’s open data. At 3,170.46, COP 1,000,000 is about US$315.
Argentina. DolarApi shows the official Banco Nación rate at 1,480 to buy and 1,530 to sell on Thursday. The blue (informal market rate) was 1,525 and 1,545, and the CCL (contado con liquidación, a rate for dollars bought through securities) was 1,615.5 and 1,616. ARS 1,000,000 is about US$654 at the official sell rate and about US$619 at the CCL sell rate, and ArgentinaDatos puts country risk (the extra yield investors demand on Argentine dollar bonds) at 622 points on 15 October.
Peru. We could not obtain SUNAT’s (the tax authority’s) rate. The market close was 3.438 soles per dollar on Thursday 15 October, and banks quote their own rates. At 3.438, PEN 1,000 is about US$291.
The wider picture. Mexico’s peso and Colombia’s peso gained about 0.5% and 0.9%, while the real weakened about 0.2% against the dollar. One day does not set a trend, and currencies often overshoot after news and then settle.
03Visas, Residency & Tax
Colombia: 15 days left. Foreigners holding a permanent-resident visa issued under earlier rules must transfer it before 31 October 2026, the Foreign Ministry has reiterated. The process is online; the ministry advises using its official site without intermediaries. Our earlier explainer sets out who is affected.
Argentina: what 33.4% inflation means for your budget. Argentina’s statistics institute INDEC reported on Tuesday 13 October that consumer prices rose 1.9% in September and 33.4% over 12 months. Housing, water, electricity and gas rose 3.1% in the month, which matters most for anyone renting or paying utility bills. Our guide to what this means for expats has the detail.
Peru: regional runoff on 6 December. The electoral court (JNE) moved the second round of the regional elections from Sunday 29 November to Sunday 6 December, according to Gestión. Foreign residents cannot vote for governors, and our expat guide to the runoffs carries the new date.
Brazil: foreigners and the runoff. Most foreign residents cannot vote. A Datafolha poll released on 8 October (2,520 interviews, margin of error 2 points) put Flávio Bolsonaro at 49% and Lula at 45% in the runoff, a gap at the edge of the poll’s margin of error, and polls are snapshots. Our runoff guide covers the practical side.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
