Arsenal were once regarded as revolutionaries in English football following Arsène Wenger’s arrival as manager. The Frenchman transformed the Gunners’ style of play, attracted new generations of supporters and helped make the Premier League more appealing to football fans around the world.
Wenger built a reputation for attractive football, with his teams becoming known for their technical quality and attacking approach. However, by the time he left the club, Arsenal had fallen behind Manchester City, who had appointed Pep Guardiola and established themselves among the leading forces in English football.
Arsenal’s playing style faces criticism
Guardiola brought the philosophy that had distinguished his teams at Barcelona and Bayern Munich to English football. Under his leadership, City developed a recognisable style built around possession, movement and attacking control, setting a high standard for their domestic rivals.
Arsenal now have Mikel Arteta in charge, and supporters might have expected a similar approach because he spent three seasons working under Guardiola before taking the managerial role at the Emirates. However, the football produced by the Gunners has drawn criticism from those who believe it lacks the excitement associated with Wenger’s greatest teams.
Although Arsenal have remained competitive, questions continue to surround their attacking play. Their recent match against Nottingham Forest provided another talking point, with the Gunners securing a 1-0 victory despite managing only one shot on target.

Collomosse delivers a blunt verdict
The narrow win ensured Arsenal collected three important points, but the performance did little to silence critics who want to see more creativity and attacking intent. For a team with significant investment in its starting line-up, expectations remain high, and supporters naturally want performances that match the club’s ambitions.
Journalist Tom Collomosse assessed Arsenal’s display against Forest and compared the current team unfavourably with the club’s celebrated past. Writing in the Daily Mail, he delivered a sharp verdict on Arteta’s side and their approach in the final third.
“Sadly, where once we had Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles, we now endure Mikel Arteta’s Unwatchables. One shot on target, one goal, three points. For the second time this season, there were no through-balls. That’s what you get for your £600million starting XI, folks.”
The criticism reflects concerns about Arsenal’s creativity and their ability to entertain while pursuing results. Arteta will be pleased with the points, but the challenge remains to deliver more convincing attacking performances as the season progresses.
