"Alley," the first animated feature from director Bong Joon-ho, will reach Korean audiences in July next year.
Production company Barunson C&C said on the 12th that "Alley" has confirmed a July 2027 release in Korea. The film opens in France on the 14th of the same month and is also set for a theatrical release in the United States.
"Alley" follows deep-sea creatures living in an underwater canyon who are curious about the human world. It centers on Alley, a baby piglet squid who wants to see the sun with her own eyes and dreams of appearing on television, as she and her friends are swept into an unexpected adventure.
It is the first animated feature from Bong, who directed "Parasite" (2019) and "Mickey 17" (2025), and brought together production teams from 12 countries including Korea, France and Britain.
Director Yu Jae-seon, who made the film "Sleep" (2023), is credited as a co-writer, and Hollywood actors including Bradley Cooper, Ayo Edebiri, Dave Bautista and Finn Wolfhard provide voice performances. German master filmmaker Werner Herzog also lends his voice.
After completing "Alley," Bong plans to begin writing in earnest in the crime and horror genres, according to reports. Asked in a recent interview with a U.S. entertainment outlet about a horror film set in the Seoul subway, Bong said the idea is "still in my head" and that he currently has "two or three stories." He added that he has "always loved crime stories and dark horror action films."
Bong made his feature debut in 2000 with "Barking Dogs Never Bite," and has since directed "Memories of Murder," "The Host," "Mother," "Snowpiercer," "Okja," "Parasite" and "Mickey 17."
