The Chungju Global Partnership Day program, held Oct. 6-7, drew praise from participants for its diverse activities, thoughtful organization and opportunities for exchange with local officials, including Chungju Mayor Lee Dong-seok and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
At Chungju City Hall in North Chungcheong Province, Ban addressed climate change following a presentation on carbon neutrality. Citing increasingly frequent extreme weather events, including heat waves, cold spells, droughts and heavy rainfall, he emphasized the importance of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
For many participants, however, the most memorable moments came from experiencing Korean culture firsthand, particularly alongside their families.
The event was attended by ambassadors, diplomats and officials from 13 embassies and their family members. Embassies represented at the event were Bulgaria, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Oman, Portugal, Rwanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uzbekistan and Zambia.
Diplomats stationed in South Korea described their two-day visit to Chungju as a memorable family experience that went well beyond a conventional diplomatic gathering to include everything from lively cultural performances to exploring Korea's regional traditions.
Among them was Iraqi Embassy Counselor Dr. Mustafa Ahmed Mustafa Mustafa, who attended with his wife, Thuria Saad Znad Mihyawi, and their 8-year-old daughter, Jana Mustafa Ahmed Ahmed.
On the second morning, Jana appeared in a traditional Korean hanbok and took part in a plate-spinning activity during a program featuring samulnori, or traditional Korean percussion.
"Everything has been beautiful and enjoyable, and we have really enjoyed this trip," Mustafa told The Korea Herald.
Tanzanian Ambassador to South Korea Noel Emmanuel Kaganda described the visit as "a very good and very memorable experience."
"We thank the mayor of Chungju for putting together such a brilliant program, and we also thank The Korea Herald for organizing this wonderful event," Kaganda told The Korea Herald.
Other participating diplomats similarly praised the event's organization and the opportunity to engage directly with local officials.
One participant highlighted the professional arrangements surrounding the participation of Ban and Chungju's mayor, as well as the diversity of activities offered.
Another said Chungju Mayor Lee's active involvement throughout the program was particularly noteworthy, describing the visit as a valuable opportunity to strengthen exchanges between local government and the diplomatic community.
The tour's family-oriented nature also drew positive responses.
One diplomat said exploring Korean regional culture with family was particularly rewarding.
Another participant expressed appreciation for the program and the warm hospitality extended throughout the visit.
Beyond the formal exchanges, the cultural performances and hands-on activities encouraged diplomats and their families to interact with their local hosts in an informal setting, offering a closer look at life outside the capital.
For the visiting diplomats, the two-day tour provided not only an introduction to Chungju's cultural and economic ambitions but also an opportunity to build personal connections with the city and its people.
