Coach Kalani Sitake’s BYU Cougars took down the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Week 6 action that included a controversial late pass interference no-call. The game also included a key Fighting Irish injury and a clock-related controversy toward the end.
The clock at LaVell Edwards Stadium appeared to show one second left after a CJ Carr pass was intended for Jaden Greathouse but fell incomplete. NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay said that there should have been a review afterward as a photo of the scoreboard was shared.
“There was indeed :01 on the bug clock when the pass hit the ground. Replay should have reviewed to determine if the in-stadium clock was at :01 at that point and if so, ND would have had one more play.”

BYU finished with a controversial 28-24 win that knocked the Irish down to 6-1 on the season and gave Sitake’s team a chance to move up in the polls, on a wild night in college football. Notre Dame fell behind 21-10 after the first half, which included an unbelievable Marcus Gilbert catch near the sideline. The Irish couldn’t fully contain Bear Bachmeier, the BYU QB, who had an early rushing touchdown and continued to find success at various times throughout his team’s big home win.
Notre Dame will now have a week to digest what happened. The bye week precedes a Halloween matchup at Navy followed by a huge showdown against the Miami Hurricanes, who could be number one in all the land by the time the new polls come out. Notre Dame blew a huge opportunity to go to 7-0, and it came under odd circumstances. How Freeman’s team responds will ultimately be the measuring stick for an Irish squad that can still do amazing things this season.
