Looters Target Luxury Boutiques and Apple Stores as Violent Protests Sweep France
Violent unrest and widespread looting erupted across France on October 17 as demonstrations over the rising cost of living and deteriorating public services escalated into clashes, fires and attacks on businesses.
Masked groups smashed shop windows and raided stores selling luxury goods, electronics, cosmetics and other merchandise in several cities, including Paris, Marseille, Lille and Nice. An Hermès boutique in Marseille and an Apple Store in Lille were among the reported targets.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said 1,200 people had been arrested nationwide, while at least 150 police officers were injured during the unrest. Police deployed tear gas and water cannon as officers confronted violent groups.
Although the demonstrations were largely peaceful, opportunistic looters and violent groups caused extensive damage to businesses and public buildings. Authorities have vowed to hold those responsible accountable as investigations continue.
