Phoenix Suns Make $29 Million Decision on Rising Young Center

The Phoenix Suns are making a significant investment in their future as they prepare for the start of the 2026-27 NBA season.

Phoenix has agreed to a three-year, $29 million contract extension with center Oso Ighodaro, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

Ighodaro's agent, Erika Ruiz of Primera Sports, confirmed the agreement, which will keep the 24-year-old with the organization through the 2030-31 season.

The extension will begin during the 2028-29 season after the Suns exercise Ighodaro's team option for 2027-28, allowing Phoenix to maintain financial flexibility while securing the young center's future.

The agreement represents a significant commitment to a player who has steadily developed into an important part of the team's frontcourt rotation.

Originally selected with the No. 40 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Ighodaro arrived in Phoenix through a draft-night trade after spending four seasons at Marquette. He appeared in all 82 regular-season games last season, making 24 starts while averaging 6.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

The 6-foot-11 center also shot an impressive 65.3% from the field, providing the Suns with an efficient offensive presence around the basket.

His availability and development have become particularly important with Phoenix facing uncertainty at the center position.

Starting center Mark Williams is expected to miss multiple months following shoulder surgery, leaving Ighodaro and second-year big man Khaman Maluach competing for increased responsibilities.

The opportunity could allow Ighodaro to build on a season in which he established himself as a dependable rotation player. His ability to finish around the rim, move defensively and contribute as a passer gives Phoenix a versatile option in its frontcourt.

For the Suns, the extension also reflects a commitment to developing young talent rather than relying entirely on expensive additions to improve the roster.

Phoenix has invested heavily in its established stars, making the emergence of affordable contributors increasingly valuable.

Ighodaro's new contract provides long-term stability while giving him an opportunity to establish himself as a consistent starter.

The Suns open their regular season Wednesday against the Portland Trail Blazers, with their center rotation among the biggest questions entering the matchup.

Phoenix may still be searching for answers in its frontcourt, but its latest $29 million commitment makes one thing clear: Ighodaro is firmly part of the organization's future.
