Motorists travelling from the East Coast Road (ECR) to Rajiv Gandhi Salai face severe traffic congestion at at Akkarai junction because of a bus stop near the intersection.
The bus stop on Sholinganallur Main Road, which connects the ECR with Rajiv Gandhi Salai, disrupts traffic in both directions, inconveniencing those travelling from Mahabalipuram to Thiruvanmiyur and from Thiruvanmiyur to Sholinganallur.
Social activist Satish Galley urged transport authorities and the traffic police to relocate the bus stop to ease congestion. Heavy traffic, unauthorised parking, and restaurants on either side of the junction add to the congestion during weekends, he added.
A senior Metropolitan Transport Corporation official said a decision on the residents’ request to shift the bus stop would be made after consultations with the traffic police.
A traffic police officer said road-widening work was under way at the junction. “When a bus stops here, the entire stretch gets blocked. We are taking steps to ease congestion,” the officer said.
