- Party secretary general Peter Mukhito says he met the President in South Africa and dismisses claims he is bedridden.
Malawi’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party has rejected rumours about the health of President Arthur Peter Mutharika, saying he is well and continuing to govern.

In a statement dated October 25, 2026, party secretary general Peter Mukhito said he had met the President in South Africa on Friday, October 23, for more than an hour.
He described Mutharika as “cheerful, vibrant and in good health”.
Mukhito said claims that the President is bedridden were inconsistent with what he had seen and should be treated with caution.
He urged the public not to present speculation as fact without credible evidence.
He also argued that the President’s physical location does not mean he has stopped leading the country.
Citing the COVID-19 pandemic, Mukhito said modern communication allows consultations and decisions to be made from different places.
“His Excellency continues to provide leadership to our country despite being physically outside Malawi,” the statement said.
The party stressed that Mutharika holds a constitutional mandate extending to 2030.
Mukhito called on DPP members and “all peace-loving Malawians” to remain calm and avoid unsubstantiated rumours.
