Comrade Churchill Oyowe has been re-elected as Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council.
Oyowe secured 235 votes to defeat his challenger, Comrade Kenneth Obieh, who polled 218 votes in the election conducted on Thursday at the NUJ Press Centre, Asaba.
In his acceptance speech after being sworn-in, Oyowe pledged to entrench unity and pursue improved welfare for journalists in the state.
He said his administration would build on lessons from the last three years to reposition the union for greater impact.
“Whatever the outcome of today, it is a divine arrangement. We cannot say anyone is vanquished. We are all victors in this exercise,” Oyowe said.
He assured that his leadership would run an all-inclusive administration where every member would have a sense of belonging irrespective of differences during the election.
“As chairman, we pledge to work as a team going forward. We will improve our relationship with members, be open and transparent, and give everyone a sense of belonging,” he added.
He also commended the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his support for the council, particularly the reported donation of a new 2026 Toyota Hiace bus. He said the governor had continued to support the council, while a promised solar power system was still in progress.
The Chairman expressed hope that the union would secure a better welfare package for journalists in 2027.
Also speaking, the Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, urged members to support the new leadership, stressing that the election was fairly conducted and fairly won.
“I am happy that the election has been keenly contested, conducted fairly and won fairly,” Aniagwu said.
He urged members who supported other candidates to accept the outcome and cooperate with Oyowe, noting that the chairman should now be recognised as the leader of the council.
“Whether you supported him or voted for another candidate, he is now your chairman and leader,” the commissioner said.
Aniagwu urged Oyowe to forgive those who may have offended him during the electioneering process, be magnanimous in victory and carry everyone along to build a united, stronger and more vibrant council.
Other elected members of the State Executive Council include Comrade Patrick Ochei as Vice Chairman, Comrade Felix Ekwu as Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodion as Assistant Secretary, Comrade Caroline Ubini as Treasurer, Comrade Toju Oteri as Financial Secretary and Comrade Michael Ilaya as Auditor.
