Residents in Yangon’s Pazundaung Township told DVB that the popular annual Yegyaw festival and night bazaar, which is a part of the Buddhist Thadingyut festival every October to mark the end of Lent, is back this year and will be held from Oct. 21-27.
“Yangon’s nightlife has not returned to pre-coup vibrancy, even though the city’s curfew was lifted and the military regime hosts celebrations for every occasion,” a resident of Yangon’s Lanmadaw Township told DVB on the condition of anonymity.
Named after the township’s Yegyaw road, the festival was held earlier this year by residents, on Feb. 12-17, to celebrate Myanmar’s 79th Union Day. Last year, the Yegyaw festival was held from Oct. 1-7 after it returned in 2024 after a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Residents and regime officials warn attendees to be alert while attending the Yegyaw festival, which comes six months after the Thingyan water festival— Myanmar’s New Year—and has been described as the second most popular street festival in the country.
