The family of a Ste. Anne chef who died after an altercation at a party says they are angry a manslaughter charge has been stayed against a 46-year-old man.
“What I’ve been told is they don’t have enough evidence to prosecute criminally because the only ones that are alive to tell the story are saying they did it in self defence,” said Jason Huley, brother of 49-year-old Cameron Huley, who died May 3.
“I’m pissed. I hate our justice system … I feel they let us down.”

Steinbach RCMP were called to a home in the RM of Ste. Anne just after 11:30 p.m. on May 2 about an assault. Cameron Huley was found suffering from serious injuries. He died hours later in hospital, police said.
RCMP said in a May news release that major crime investigators determined Cameron was at a party outside a home where an altercation between several people took place.
The Crown stayed manslaughter charge against Jeff Wyness, 46, Wednesday afternoon in a Winnipeg court, Jason said. The family had been advised of the Crown’s decision last week.
Jason, 52, said he has numerous concerns related to the investigation, including his belief that it was slow to start and the scene wasn’t properly secured.
He said he was told his brother, a chef and prominent community member in Ste. Anne, died as a result of being hit in the back of the head with a bottle, but added he questions even that.
“I’ve lost all faith in our justice system,” Jason said. “It does not work for victims at all.”
Jason said he raised his concerns with the Manitoba Prosecution Service attorney who handled the case, but was told “there was nothing they could do. They can only work with the evidence they were provided.”
Cameron, who leaves behind a 12-year-old son, was well-loved by his family, friends and fellow culinary experts, his brother said
“In his 49-years, he did more than most people do in their entire life,” Jason said.
He asked for anyone with additional information about the incident that may not have come forward to do so.
Police had said Wyness, who lived in the RM, was arrested without incident and did not know Cameron. He was friends with residents at the home where the altercation took place.
